Question about Lexmark X5150 All-In-One InkJet Printer

4 Answers

Refilled Cartridge I have installed a refilled Lexmark cartridge and software refuses to accept it. Lexmark X4550 keeps saying "alignment problem." I suspect this is part of manufacturer's software designed to prevent use of generic or refilled cartridges and force users to buy overpriced replacement Lexmark cartridges. I had been very pleased with this all-in-one but now I am becoming enraged by the manufacturer's use of extortion and considering dumping this machine. Any idea how to get the Lexmark to accept refills or generics?

Exactly same problem happens to me, too. This X4550 doesn't let me use any compatible cartridge and it is coming from their software that I had to install to utilize this printer. I'm wondering if LEXMARK is the only printer manufacturer doing this. Is there anyone who has brilliant idea to fool their irritating sales?

After multiple attempts and no success, I went out and bought a new Lexmark cartridge. By now I was so paranoid, I was afraid the X4550 had been permanently disabled, but fortunately this was not the case. Everything worked fine.

Next step is to take my refilled cartridges back to the store where they were refilled and try to get my money back. I don't think this was their fault, but they do offer a "100% guarantee" -- whatever that means.

I still think the X4550 is a terrific little machine. Gives lots of performance for a very modest price. But I am deeply offended by Lexmark's business practices. You not only can't use a generic cartridge, you can't even use a refilled Lexmark. I will warn anyone asking for advice about buying a printer!

Yes, I have the same problem with my Lexmark X4550. Worked fine on refilled ink for a while, but it now automatically cancels every print job I send saying I have to order a Lexmark cartridge. Seems like a restraint of trade to me and the printer is now not 'fit for purpose'. I wonder if Trading Standards will be interested...?

Anyway, not found a way round yet. I'd rather dump the printer and go back to an HP than pay £25 to refill a £75 printer. ARE YOU LISTENING LEXMARK? Why do you want to annoy your customers?

Got the same problem on the X4550. It also tells me to "remove the tape from the cartridge" on the printer's LCD display. Of course there's no tape. This is one of the dirtiest vendor lock-ins I've ever come across.

yes get the same with the X4550 - alignment problem doesn't clear, and cant get it to accept a refilled cartridge

  • noelito40 Jul 30, 2008

I too am infuriated by Lexmark pushing non refillable cartridges, and by the shops who are complicit in the deception...

There is a solution though and that is that Lexmark have 2 ranges of cartridges, the non refillable (in red boxes) which they and the retail outlets shamelessly push, and the refillable ones (grey boxes). I had non refillable 23/24 black/colour and replaced them with refillable 33/34 (or 34/35, can't remember!) In a few months I'll have to refill the new cartridges so I'll see then whether these "refillable" ones actually work.

Oh and by the way, if anyone can get a straight answer from Lexmark on this "refillable" scam, let me know...

Yes. I bought a Lexmark X4550. Good printer, but cartridges are not refillable. DO NOT BUY Lexmark.

I have a Lexmark X5150 have refilled it in the past with no issue. I printed a picture on got some pinkest-red at bottom. I thought that it was low on ink. refilled color. when i printed I got a total pinkest-red photo. I tried printing some thing from Word and got a faint black text print ( black had worked fine before ) and a pink color . I cleaned Ect. still same. Read the posts tried all, I now get a 95% black print and pink. Printer works with scan Ect.
    Anyone got info on this

Same problem here guys. The "alignment problem" "check paper" I am so upset. I bought my cartridges at Staples #23/24. They were in red/black box. Which I assumed were not re-fillable. I called Lexmark, they are sending me a free box of cartridges. They said if these do not work, they would send me a free printer!! Ya Right! Lexmark you better listen to your customers.....cuz HP is the one I will go back to........

This was at a Chicago Staples grand opening promo.

All features worked well at first. Started buying new cartridges at HORRIBLE prices. Not practical for extended use.

Tried three or four ink refilling procedures from different companies. I also do exactly what they say. Results are inconsistent and very frustrating. Sometimes - but not always - the first (or even second) refillings work OK (regardless of what is displayed on Lexmark).

My LATEST re-inking kit is from Walgreens and is cheap. First re-inking of BOTH B/W and Color worked OK

When re-inserting cartridges I am given a choice between "new" and "old" - but I do not understand one choice over another. I remember in the past, either choice seemed to work (or not work) the same. Anyone know what this is all about? ? ?

Lexmark shows both cartridges as FULL. After multiple "clean" operations, only blank unprinted sheets come out of printer. Ditto with "align" or "normal" printing attempts. So my problems are different than what I read here. No error message. Others are getting error messages of one sort of another. I wonder of there is some kind of "chip" technology in Lexmark cartridges to keep users from refilling - so as to eliminate the THEFT-PRICED new cartridges. Unless I learn of a practical proceedure that works all the time, I'm inclined to buy a different ink jet or color laser jet printer. Ultimate price per page is very important to me. The X5150 remains OK for simple scanning and fixing images.

Does anyone get CONSISTENT refilling successes with X5150?
If not, are their any recommendations on alternated choices?

In the last century in dot matrix era, I used to re-ink Epson ribbons forever and forever - with no strain on the brain. It always worked. Never any mysterious problems. There just has to be a specific model of ink jet printer where one would have similar success. Or not? Am I seeking the impossible? THANKS.

After refilling a Lexmark cartridge and placing it back in your machine you will sometimes get a 'cartridge not recognized' error message. When you get a 'cartridge error' message you should do the following first:
-Remove the cartridge from the cartridge holder and snap it back in. Try printing. If that doesn't solve the error message...
-Get a q-tip or similar applicator and wet it with alcohol. Remove the cartridge.
-Gently wipe the copper colored circuitry clean (do not wipe the nozzles, where the ink comes out).
-Gently wipe the contacts in the printer where the cartridge snaps in. Put the cartridge back into the printer and try printing.

What we are trying to accomplish with the above is to clean any residue, whether it be visible or not, from the circuitry to ensure a clean 'signal' from the print job to the print head (circuitry). Even the smallest amount of residue can cause error messages.

You can usually reset these error messages by turning the printer off, using the printer's on/off switch, and then unplugging it from it's AC power source for 15-30 minutes. Re-plug the printer, turn it on and print a test page.

Sometimes after refilling, the cartridge will not register as 'full' in the 'ink level monitor'. This is because the printer 'remembers' the refilled cartridge as being 'empty'. The printer stores the cartridge information of the last 2-3 cartridges used. Try the above to 'reset' the printer's memory.

I have a Lexmark X7170 with the same type problem. Refilled without a prob for many times. The last time I couldn't use it after refill and bought a new cartridge which is already out of ink. I refilled it and after installing it I get a message that the cartridge is missing and the alignment won't work

Icalled my ink supplier to see if they knew of an anti refill device put in by Lexmark and they said that they had not heard this.. While talking I remembered that the previously I got a message while printing that the cartridge was missing but if I clicked OK the printer printed without a problem! So maybe yoy just need to skip the alignment, ignore the messages and try to print anyway. The last one I refilled is now working .

Another possibility is that after some number of refills the cartridges just quit and you need to occasionally purchase a new one - this I heard previously from my supplier

Good Luck

Epson Stylus TX400. Refuses to accept either compatable or refilled cartridges?

Epson TX400 is so sensitive in terms of ink cartridges, you can only replace a refilled ink cartridge in this type of printer if the cartridge has an automatic ink reseter chip. When you replace a cartridge in your printer, it will automatically register the ink level in the chip. So you need an ink reseter chip to replace a new refilled cartridge.

My lexmark X5410 will not accept the black and colored refilled ink cartridges from walgreens. It keeps reporting that the right cartridge is missing.

If you have refilled the cartridges 28 and 29, it's pretty normal that your printer won't print. Those cartridges are not for refill (they can be refilled, but won't work once the printer says they are empty). If you have refilled a 28A and 29A and it doesn't recognize the one of the cartridges, try removing them and clean the electric contacts with a dry cloth. Put them back in. If that doesn't help, I suggest you buy a new cartridge.

Lexmark X2600 refill problem

many printer manufacturers put something (a chip?) in the circuit of the cartridge to prevent refilled ones from being recognized by the printer....when the "factory" cartridge is empty, the only way for the printer to see a full cartridge again is by using a "new" factory one, ...i guess it's the big name brands way of making sure you buy "their" ink and not use refulls.
