Question about ECM Giotto Espresso Machine

Ecm Giotto symptoms The machine overheats, once before replacing the pressure switch solved the problem. This time however after the installing the new switch only the pump worked not the heater. I reinstalled the old switch and it once again overheated. I called Burgess Enterprises in Seattle and they sent me out another switch but after installing it the same results as the first replacement occurred.

Hi,

Most single boiler home espresso machines have both a coffee and a steam temperature thermostat. For overheat protection many machines use a thermal fuse, which must be replaced by a service technician in the rare event that it is 'tripped'. Other machines, such as Rancilio use a resetable safety thermostat, which like a circuit breaker can be reset by the handy homeowner.
Very high-end home machines (ECM Giotto, Rancilio S24) using the heat exchanger system use an adjustable pressurestat, which besides being extremely reliable allow for infinite pressure and temperature adjustment. The overpressure safety system on these machines is usually a spring type safety valve.

Goodluck..

    Worst case failure:

    All expresso machines use a
pressurestat -- really little more than an diaphragm and a spring
attached to a switch. -- in some cases this switch operates a solid
state relay, to offload the job of switching the 10 or 12 amp load from
    the heater.

All epxresso machines have a safety valve, generally
shipped with a certificate and serial number as its perfomance is so
    highly critical.

After possibly performing erratically, a pstat will usually fail ON. which results in the following:

Excessive steam and water pressure blows out through the relief valve, continuously, making a fearsome racket. . . .

Until all the water in the water tank is exhausted, due to the autofill box calling for more water. Flooding results.

    The
boiler, now dry, the thermal fuse or Hi temp overload thermostat cuts
power to the heater and in some cases the pump (which may be running
dry now and will over-heat and if a cutout is not provided (Ulka) will
    burn out.

OR, if the unit is plumbed-in, the process continues
indefinitely, continuing to flood the area. At some point hopefully,
due to internal current leakage, a wall mounted GFCI receptacle, or
breaker, will drop power to the unit.

    bottom line advice is
if you even suspect a pstat issue, replace it IMMEDIATELY. and don't
leave your machine on when no one is home.

Have you checked the Thermostat on the unit in the tank if it is stuck it will cause the tank to over heat and pop off the steam valve?? there should be some resettable overheat protectors as well. Has the preassure relief valve been replaced as well??

ECM Giotto toggle (power) switch needs replacement ASAP in Seattle area.

i had this happen myself a few months ago, power switch blew, i took the machine apart took out the power switch, and visited a few local electrical component suppliers, its a standard switch but its 2 stage single throw switch, home depot/Lowe's don't carry this type. ended up going to 3 diff suppliers and finally found a commercial supplier that had it connected the new one and now its fine, works better than the old one ever did. just make sure you bring the broken switch with you when you go to show them, most good suppliers can match it and see if they have one like it in stock.

I have a Giotto ECM esspresso machine. it is approximately 3 yrs old. recently when i turn the machine on, it starts heating up, but it doesn't create any pressure. any suggestions how to fix this problem.

Hi
1 solution is your vacuum breaker valve is sticking. Try opening the steam valve and see if you can start to heat again. If it does just, replace your vacuum breaker valve.

ECM Giotto releases steam instead of water from the coffee group

Check the shower screen and diffuser in the head, they might be blocked, if not, check the metering jet at the top of the head(large nut) CAREFUL, make sure machine is off and cool before removing, use a paperclip or pipe cleaner to clear blockage. If not blocked then you will have to check the brew solenoid.

Hey! My ECM Giotto is building up too much pressure. 2+ bars. I tried resetting it but no lick. New thermostat?

The pressostat can be full of scale. You can remove it when the machine is cold descale it and also use a litle lubricate so the part can move more easily. You migh need a new mebrane since it might have be damage but if you dong have you can cut a plastic the same round shape of the mebrane and put the both back again so that no steam will escape from the mabrane.

Replace the magnets in the water tank, the reed switch is not reading one of them, most likely the safety or bottom magnet.

Pump failure after warmup

Ther is a very simle heating cirquit with a prssure swithch including a Cherry micro swithc. This thing is rated max 60C. With time the plastic just get bent out of shape and you have no pressure. have fixed by changing the Pressostate or just the Cherry switch. The Element must come on at low pressure. It has an mechanical setpoint. So hotter coffe (higher steam press) can be set with a scew driver. Finally the safety valve lifts and you have learnt a little re boilers. Leaking safety valve need a new seal, Be careful,,if not, your ECM will serve the first espresso on the moon/// Olev

No Pressure..No heat

Se my solution re no heat on page. pressostate or microswitch fail is easy to fix. many times the water tank is bebt out of shape with time. A twisted tank lift one side and tank is no longer resting on four points. This cause no contact with electrodes inside tank saying = no water = no power allowed. The GROUND must be established! A small piece of alu foil rolled to a ball will help to ground the electrode again. Lift the tank gently and find the two v - shaped contacts for the electrodes. Have also replaced the electronic box once :-( on friends ECM /// olev

Giotto pressure valve constantly on

You must have an internal leak and your machine will need to be serviced. If you can remove the top of the machine maybe you can see where the leak is coming from and may be able to repair the machine yourself.

Giotto premium - is it a lemon?

My friend, had the same feeling,,,What have a done !! This piece of junk for all my dollars! No ,,it needs cleaning. Read all my comments re this. You can open this machine witha few fixed keys and mantain it. It will outlast you, when correctly mantained. All solid cupper and metal, no plastic. take it apart and CLEAN IT!
Remember - it is built by a human beeing. The ECM is a buty as it has very little automation built in. Very siple function = löong time in love with your machine. It is totally ANALOG = tweek it = better cogffee. /// Olev

Air pressure problem

Hi,

I am having a similar problem.  Doesn't happen all the time, just sometimes.  My research has led me to believe it might be the vacuum breaker valve.  I am going to order a new one here:

I'll replace mine & post if it fixes it.

Good Luck
