i don't use a sony dvd but i have a hp laptop (hp 530) i thik the dvd writer installed with it is hitachi, the dvd stopped reading every disk no autorun and whenever i tried opening disk content from windows explorer, it ejects the cd immediately on click and prompt to insert a cd into the drive.
in the case of dvd, it locks the disk inside until i restart my computer and i must eject dvd before it starts booting or else, i'l have to wait for a long time for computer to open up. it behaves as if reading from dvd.

Geoffrey Thomas eui746@gmail.com I'm a RDR GX 210 Owner. I found this problem common with mine. I've found a rather crude but effective way to get my machine working.

If I get a cannot read from the disk message I polish the suface of the effending disk with a dry lint free ( typical cotton bussiness short or pure cotton bed sheet cloth), and re-insert.And Hey presto away it goes.

If anybodies interested I wrote a artical on why DVD don't work, offering solutions

I have a Sony RDR-GX7 DVD recorder that has become very selective in reading DVDs. All the home made DVDs and insertion of new (SONY) DVD blanks result in "disc error". Only exception to the rule...

The laser is probably getting old. Disk have different "grades" and as the unit gets older it cant read the higher ones.
For instance you will probably see that your unit will 100% read CD's official or not.

A Sony RDR-GX210 DVD player I can play a CD - no problem but when I try a DVD, the TV screen says - ''loading please wait'' and then it drops back to the TV picture witha message - ''Can't play this disc''...

Hi Allan,

When you get no disk error, that is usually because of a problem with the optical laser lens that is dirty, faulty or opaque, and will start operating on certain disks better than others.

In that case you will hear disk spinning, whirring and clicking, but the TOC (table of content track at start of CD/DVD will not be read, therefore the error.

Whe this problem is starting you may be able to read only CD, DVD or Blue ray, or for example only DVD-R and not +R , or only to read and not to write and so on. After more prolonged usage , often the unit goes losing the rest of functions, and ends up not reading anything at all.

In your case the lens does not work on DVD , but only on CDs for the reasons above , that is quite common.

If instead there is no noise, and disk does not spin at all , then there is a faulty motor, or the motor micro-switch is bad. This situation is far less common than the lens problem.

Try first using a CD/DVD or Blue ray lens cleaner disk to clean the lens. If that does not work you will need to disassemble the drive , and clean lens directly with q tips and isopropyl alcohol, or to replace the CD/DVD lens, or the whole drive unit.

Check file extensions of files on your recorded cd's. Add file extension to Roxio, Windows Media player and check your drive settings.

Playing PC DVD roms problem

Dvd drives can read from both DVD and CD however due to technological limitations most DVD-ROM or RAM read up to slightly higher speeds for CDs than DVDs.

When burning DVDs professional companies that make prerecorded disks burn their disk at low speeds in an effort to achieve both compatibility and low errors, that is the reason their DVDs play on most DVD-ROMs. However DVDs me and you burn at home and work at high speeds are prone to errors and incompatibility with low reading speed drives.

As a result if your DVD-ROM has a low maximum reading speed then it can only read those prerecorded DVDs and only DVDs recorded at low speeds provided thre are not scratched.

I believe you managed to read those DVD movies if they were pre recorded.
