First make sure your Panasonic has 16:9 TV mode selected within its menu. Then try chainging the picture size on your TV. You didn't say what model TV you have. On my Samsung you would press the menu key then select picture, scroll down and select picture size. From hear you can select 16:9, wide zoom, zoom, 4:3. Try looking for picture size and selecting 16:9 on your TV.
The first thing that springs to mind is screen size is set wrong.
You should be able to change it from your remote, It is the Aspect
button, it will give you letterbox size etc..

Some program have copy protection or your installations cable and setup try to set lower resolutions and make sure you see the picture on TV before record

There is 1 firmware update on this model for only Australia
However there is setup to be check as follow
TV shows low picture quality. (Ex) Blotting colors…
In most cases, above symptom is not real defect.
1. Press the MENU button.
3. Select the Display Setup.
4. You can see the "Picture Quality" category.
5. Select the Picture quality.
6. You can adjust "Sharpness" & " Brightness" & " Color Saturation"

nip to the website and ask them as you don't give much detail on connection side some use rca connection others use scart connection and others go through rf leads to tv.
on samsung always try manufactures webpages before coming here some solutions we find are posted on the company who built the pruduct others are from experiance from having product itself.
