I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty using DC17 on this particular carpet type. DC17 is engineered to adjust automatically to different floor types, and does not need manual height adjustment.
Carpet manufacturers sometimes recommend vacuuming deep or delicate carpet piles with the rotating brush bar turned off. We'd recommend checking with the manufacturer of your carpeting as they'll be best placed to offer advice on the correct way of cleaning it. To turn off the brush bar on DC17, just use the silver brush control switch next to the red on/off switch.
It's also worth checking that the soleplate is fitted correctly. Any dirt or residue on the soleplate can be removed with a damp cloth - make sure it's completely dry before refitting it. You can find out how to remove and replace it here:
