Gateway M305CRV I have an old Gateway laptop that needs to be restored to factory specs. I don't have any of the original software. Did Gateway put an image on the hard drive? If so, how do I find it?

Not exactly the same, but I do have a M305CRV that I had to use the recovery disks on. That recovery seemed to have gone reasonably well, however I soon discovered I had no sound. The recovery left a "Gateway Recovery Program" in my start menu and I ended up downloading the sound driver from a list of various types of drivers it pulled from the internet. Now, a couple of weeks later, I put a movie into the dvd drive and it doesn't play. I don't see anything on that list that seem appropriate. 1) what should I do? 2) why didn't the recovery restore the entire original system 3) I also notice I have no manual which used to be loaded in the laptop memory and finally 4) am I going to be doing peacemeal recoveries for the remaining life of this laptop. Thank you very much.

No yellow question marks in Device Manager for wireless card but won't recognize PCMCIA card installed. Then I installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 and it fixed the problem!

This link to Gateway should help for the M305CRV.
http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?st=pn&param=3501715
You can call Gateway an order a restore CD or you can download everything you need from the link. Than uncompress each download before burning them to a CD/DVD.
Incert the windows CD in to the cdrom. Start the notebook & press the F8 key every two seconds until you get windows boot menue. Point to your cdrom & start the windows install. Windows will show you all the partitions currently on the drive. Have windows remove / delete any other partitions other than the C:\ Run a quick format on the drive & continue to install windows. When windows has finished you can install the drivers from the CD /DVD you made.
Even if you were able to get access to a hidden partition you couldn't run it without the restore CD. You can see all partitions with a program like Partition Magic 8.0. You can download a free trial from: http://www.soft32.com/Download/free-trial/Partition_Magic/4-151-1.html
Or
http://www.click-now.net/downloads09.htm
If you have LimeWire you can down it from there, full version.
Luck!
please vote... Still have question? Post back & do what I can.

Would like to upgrade my motherboard. What are some compatible models for a gateway M305CRV

Hello,

Unfortunately notebook PCs can't be upgraded like desktop PCs can. Each model can only use that specific motherboard. The full specs for your notebook can be found here: http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Gateway/M305CRV/3501715sp58.shtml This shows that that board can use either a Celeron processor or a Pentium 4 Mobile processor, both need to be the 100mhz buss speed versions. If you have the Celeron model notebook you can gain a little speed by replacing the chip and going to the Pentium 4 chip but it still will not be up to current notebook speeds because of the 100mhz buss speed of the board. Your best bet would be sell the laptop and get a new one. You an catch one on sale at Office Depot, Staples or Best Buy for about $400. You should be able to sell your unit for $150-250 and then put what you were going to use for a motherboard and you will be about at the price of a new one.

I hope this helps, if so please rate our solution.

Forgotten password

If you lost your windows password, try a program called "ophcrack-win32-installer-3.0.1.exe" or "ophcrack-xp-livecd-2.0.1.iso". These will crack and show any windows based usename and password on your computer.  If the problem is the bios password, for starting your laptop, then you will have to reset the bios (check manual) or remove the battery pack and on board Li battery to reset Bios. I would check the manual first. On old Toshiba laptops you could jump the parrallel pins to reset the bios, not sure on the Gateway. I will check further.
