The solenoid has two sides; it is a switch: when the ignition key; (one side) is turned, it energizes "closes" the switch to the starter motor; (other side) until the key returns; opening the solenoid switch again. hope this helps.

Does anything else electrical work? The headlights in particular should come on. If nothing works, check the charge on the battery, then it's connections including the woven ground cable between the truck frame and engine. The solenoid should have the positive battery connection and a smaller wire connection to the input terminal. A smaller yet wire that goes to the small terminal, and a large cable from the output terminal to the starter motor terminal. Using a short piece of wire to short the small terminal of the solenoid to the large terminal that has the battery connection should cause the starter to run (the engine won't start because the key is off). Hope this helps get you running!

Though selinoid was bad cause of clicking. changed it, put new starter in. now not getting anything. need diagram of wiring to selinoid.

You didn't say what kind of vehicle this is but most starters have a large stud where the positive battery cable and possibly 1-2 wires that power the vehicle go, then there should be 1 wire with a small terminal that goes to the small stud marked "s". Also check the battery ground cable on both ends to make sure it's clean and tight. I hope this helps. Take care.

When I try to connect my battery wire to the Terminal, and what do you mean I have no ignition motor trying to crank?

Your wire to the starter selinoid has some how bypassed the key switch or the selinoid is bypassed or mechanically stuck closed. The selinoid is a magnetic switch that closes the curcuit for the larger starter wire You must to make sure you are connecting the wires to the correct spots.

sounds like the battery wire to the starter is possibly the culprit, it may have a bad spot in it not allowing enough voltage to the starter. also depending on the brand solenoid you purchased it is possible to get a bad one. i recommend borg warner electrical products. i hope this helps.

Hi, the cause of this problem is the link/spring in the solenoid that engages the starter gear has broken. Remove the starter and inspect the mechanism. You can also test it by reconnecting the wires with the starter off the engine. See if the gear moves up into position when the key is turned to start. If not, replace the starter. get a new starter or starter selinoid, sounds like its hanging up possible stripped gear on starter of flywheel. If its a stick shift you can always put key in "run" position and have a couple friends push you in neutrel then when you gain speed put it in 3 gear and dump the clutch, if it starts you know the starter, selinoid, or flywheel is faulty
