Failure of a computer to retain the time/date, etc.

I just found a problem & the solution to a problem that may be perplexing a lot of people. First, the Computer is a HP a305W; second, the problem(s) were...failure to retain the Time /Date, failure to find a select the Scanner, and failure to launch the wireless system up on boot. The solution for the Time/Date problem is classically the battery (in this case a 2032), however the others can be caused by a multiple of problems; i.e.- poor connections, bad circuit board, etc. For this system the entire array of problems was caused by the battery. Just thought that everyone would like to know in case they, i.e.- are having just one, or more, of these symptoms. Hope it helps others...it really caused me to look many other places and not the battery.

I concur about the battery. If you ever have a Time/Date retention issue it is definitely your CMOS battery going bad.

Cmos battery error failure

The CMOS (BIOS) battery keeps the computer'a comfiguration and the Date & Time settings in the CMOS (BIOS) chip in its memory. When the CMOS (BIOS) battery is flat these configuration information is lost.
Replace the CMOS battery with a new one, in most cases this battery is a lithium 3 volt battery type CR2032 and it is coin size battery 18mm in dia.(check it to make sure the type of battery is installed on your motherboard).
When you replace this battery then go into the BIOS and set the Date & Time etc.

I have a honda 2006 accord and at two different times the ignition key would not fully enter causing failure to start. The first time I called AAA to come to my aid. The AAA driver, noting the problem,...

it sounds as if the key is bad (a crack in the metal or such) or that you may be inadvertently turning the key when you insert/ remove it before it is fully in/ out of the ignition.

Hi , i've HP ML370 G4 server , after power failure , the server can't boot . i try to reinstall memory & remove all parts & fix it agian but the problem still there , then after about 1 hours it's...

It may be that the lithium battery is dead; usually a CR2032 button battery. Signs of CMOS Battery Failure Dom Tech Computer Blog

Go into the BIOS settings during initial power on boot up, often F10 or F2 are common. Check the date and time, if they are off, you should be able to temporarily boot by setting the date and time but you'll have to do it every time you boot. If the date and time is off, and you set the correct date and time and it still doesn't boot, you'll want to make sure it's booting to the correct drive.

When it doesn't boot, does it give you any error?

My pc automatically get start on plug on .and then it suggest me to press F1 to Continue. when I do this it takes incorrect date and time how to restrict it.I want to start it with start button on cabinet

There can be many reasons...
  • Your BIOS setting is not correct.
  • CMOS battery is down(Most probably).
  • both
You can open the BIOS setting page by pressing keys like DEL, F10, etc. depending on your system's manufacturer at computer startup(post screen). There are lots of wakeup options check them properly.
One of the option is "Restore last state of power Button on failure" which can turn on your computer without touching the power button. you should check these options.

And it suggest you to press F1 because your system's date/time is not configured properly. You can also set Time/date in BIOS also.
If your BIOS Battery(CMOS) is not weak or dead then after setting these values your computer should start properly.
And if your BIOS battery is dead then all the settings will be lost(date/time etc) after a restart and you will face same problem again...

Try changing the Power-button option and Date/Time in BIOS and see if problem persist....if yes then you have to change COMS battery that is on your Motherboard.

Bios date and time problem

You need to replace the cmos battery in your computer. Theu are usually Cr2032 batteries which you should be able to pick up for about £1.

unplug your computer and open the case.
When you look at the motherboard you should be able to easily locate the cmos battery cliped onto the mobo.
Take the old battery out and insert the new one.
put the case back on and plug the pc into the mains again.
You will need to re-enter the date etc the next time you boot up, but the settings should be retained after that.
