I have an HP 1012 Laser Jet, and the price of the toner cartridges is expensive. As a result, I am interested in trying to replace the ink in the toner cartridge once it is empty, as opposed to buying a new one, but I have never done this. Does any one have experience replacing ink in a laser jet toner cartridge, and can tell me what this entails.

I'm not sure there is a refill center in my area. It sounds rather straight forward using the melt and pour method. I suppose my main questions from this answer (and other research) would be how messy (or not messy) is it, and what type of ink do I need to buy?

I guess I'm resisting your warning to not do it myself. I've also visited a few other discussion forums where people seem to use the toner refill kits such as the ones that you sent, and they seem happy with the quality. I think the health issue, however, is a serious and real concern. But what if I just wear a painter's mask and do it in the garage? In terms of vacuuming out the waste, is this a question of health or the quality of the printing? Specifically, would you mind clarifying why I shouldn't do this myself? What am I really jeopardizing (if I wear a painter's mask), as it would save me some money and I think be better from the environment (though recycled cartridges would also be okay.)

I work for a company that does this and can tell you it is possible. Some companies do the drill and refill and some like mine actually take the cartridge apart and replace the drum and wiper blade.
You can buy the kits to refill your own. Usually, it just involves drilling a hole and pouring in the toner. This is the first I have heard of the melt and pour. Just be aware that eventually the parts inside will wear out and start to show image defects. You don't recommend reusing them more than twice.

Unless your refill mass quantities the health risk is not all that high. Wearing a mask is the way to go. As for how messy, it shouldn't be to bad with the toner, it will be sorta like working with flour.

Nobody has a clue how to refill a laser cartridge with ink. :)))
OK< just kidding, here it is:
First of all, laser-cartridges have toner (a fine black powder) and not ink.
Second: There are 2 methods to refill a laser cartridge: dismounting it to get to the toner chamber (involves a lot of tehnical skill) or the melt-and-pour method (see here http://www.urefilltoner.co.uk/), but you need the melting device.
But because from your question i see you dont know a thing about refilling, better go to a refill center.

I just said that "laser-cartridges have toner (a fine black powder) and not ink."
Please do not attempt to refill your cartridge, this must be learned, the powder used to refill the cartridge (called "toner")is also dangeros for health, professionals have a vacuum claner to get all waste toner out of the cartridge before the actual refill, with special filters so it will not get into the lungs.
More, after 2 or 3 refills the drum must be changed, or evan the drum cleaning blade, this means dismount the cartridge, belive me, it's too complicate.
Where are you from?
If you still think you can do it, serch on the internet for the toner refill kit for your printer, there you'll detailed instruction for how to do it.

OK, do it yourself. I was just concerned about your skills (no offense!) when i saw you ask how to refill THE INK in a laser cartridge, this is somehow like the rection you would have if someone would ask you what lamps he has to replace in a compute in order to make audio to work.
Hope you can do it without problems, let me know here how you manage to do it.
