Is this a new or used unit, and is the humming sound new? Can you watch the fan blade go around or is it going too fast to watch a blade?

If the unit still cooks alright, it is probably ok. The hum you hear is probably just the magnatron transformer mounting screws being not quite tight enough. This is not a problem, but causes the buzz or hum. Most likely if it is something more serious it will go out and there is not much to do about it until it does. Is there a filter in the unit that could be plugged not allowing the air to move through it?

Microwave lights and fans work but the food does not cook

If the microwave sounds normal, but not heating, then the magnetron is bad and needs to be replaced. If it is making a humming noise, then the diode is bad. I recommend that if it is the magnetron, ou also replace the diode.

We have just purchased a Kenwood microwave/combination oven and are concerned there may be a problem. When the food has finished cooking and the microwave beeps it seems there is a fan or something still...

In most modern combination microwave ovens, if not all, there is a fan that comes on after use to cool the magnetron and cavity down. This is quite normal but if you still have doubts, contact Kenwood's web site and send them a question.
Hope this halps to put your mind at rest.

Timer functions, fan works, great humming noise, no heat. Magnetron??

If there is no heat at all, but you can hear the magnetron humming, it is probably bad. if there is uneven heat, the wave stirrer that distributes the microwaves around the cooking chamber may be bad. it will heat only one spot unless the wave stirrer is rotating.

Making a humming noise when turned on and not cooking. I punch in the cooking time I would like and then when it turns on it makes a humming noise and does not cook.

From your description it appears that the Magnetron has failed on your microwave.

*Please be aware*
Replacing the Magnetron in a Microwave is a highly specialist job and should not be carried out by an unqualified person. Microwaves carry lethal levels of voltage even after they have been unplugged from the mains supply. The high voltage circuitry in this area of the oven is extremely dangerous and must undergo a discharging process before work can commence. The Magnetron itself is the main 'engine' of the microwave and operates under extremely high voltages.

For this reason I strongly urge you not to attempt this repair yourself but have it carried out by an electronics repair shop. The cost of this is likely to be prohibitive and you will need to weigh up whether this repair is economically viable or whether you would be better to replace the unit altogether.

Hope this helps. Thanks for using FixYa.

Humming ge sapcesaver microwave

During operation, most of the built-in models have a panel that tilts out while the exhaust fan is on. When cooking is done, the exhaust fan shuts off and the panel retracts to its normal position. With the fan & microwave motor off, the hum is easier to hear. Look closely at the top panel the next time you hear the hum, and you'll probably see that it's retracting.

Noise/humming while cooking; especially popcorn; intermitent on other food

Popcorn is heated by a metallic insert in the bag. This causes some additional power consumption by the magnetron. It is no cause for alarm.

GH7145XFB-1 not heating properly

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose conneciton on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and disassembly information at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

GE Microwave problems after HV capacitor replacement???

The rectifier diode could indeed be bad. But first I would want to know what value (in uF) the old one was and what is the value of the new one? If they're too far off, the difference in the capacitive reactance could throw off the "tuning" of the circuit. The uF value of the capacitor is optimized in relation to the other components used in the system. Of course, you'd also want to be sure your new cap is at or slightly above the working voltage rating of the old one, too.
