The wire on the data cable with the red stripe is the pin 1 end and there should be a mark on the floppy drive as well marking the pin 1 end. Plug acc to the cut

Hi

Regarding configuring flopy drive for desktop please check these things

The wire on the ribbon cable with the red stripe is the pin 1 end and there should be a mark on the floppy drive as well marking the pin 1 end. Sometimes a little arrow or triangle point at pin1 sometimes stenciled with a number.

Latitude C840 wont reconize optical drive and hard drive in BIOS, had loaded xp on hd did update to sp3 came back to see the progress the laptop had rebooted then the problem came up, tried two other hds...

For the hard drive you might have to go to computer and right click, then go to manage, then disk manage, then rescan disk if not just refresh it. The optical drive would have to be to go through the device manager in the system settings in the control panel and update the drivers.

Cd-rom drive plays but wont burn says to put in a writable disks

If it is a cd rom, and you are using CD's right? (not DVD's) then try another brand disk to rule out the disks. It may be your drive is just gone defective if thats not the answer. You can just get bad disks also.
