Re: light switch on a older kenmore refrigerator, how to...
Most light switches snap in place. If there is no apparent screw and the switch seems to have an adequate lip all around it, use a putty knife or butter knife push under that lip at one of the shorter sides and gently try to pry it up. It should pop out. the two wires are usually attached by spade connectors that just pull off. Doesn't matter which wire goes on each. Sears should be able to get a new one. But before you go that far be sure the bulb is not burnt out first. You should also take the switch with you to sears or have a friend test the switch to be sure it is truly bad..

There is a plastic switch that works the light in the door jam. Unplugg the fridge before popping this plastic switch out. I would order one first but if your light fixture is in good shape and not burn on the inside and the wires look good it is most likely the door switch. The door switch is just like an on off switch for any light its just spring loaded to turn on when the door opens. good luck
Ok so we just had our Kenmore fridge quit cooling , everything in the freezer defrosted , and we lost a lot of food,BUT my husband ordered a part #8201786 which is a starter , and installed it and it worked! The fridge was clicking but it just wouldnt kick on, and the fan still worked. There are websites that you can order the part from, It cost $63.05 with tax!!!! good luck
This is a replaceable part. A new switch can be ordered from Sears by Model number of your refrigerator and name of the part. If you have your owners manual it may contain a list with part numbers. Some of these switches will pop out to be replaced. Others you may have to remove the breaker strip where it is mounted to remove the switch by compressing the snaps on the side of the switch.
i found the defrost timer for my Kenmore 596.62239200 / freezer on bottom. it was in the top of the refrigerator compartment behind the light bulb console. had to remove the light bulb cover and then there are two visible screws that hold the defrost timer to the light console. the timer is up on top of the console and is not easily seen. ordered parts on www.repairclinic.com.
there is a tab in the bottom of the light socket that can get bent so that it wont touch the base of the new bulb. unplug your refrig and use a small screw driver and bend the tab back out a little bit so that it will contact the new bulb...
