Mine does the same thing, starts flickering and then makes loud whistle then turns off. When I put an external fan in the back it lasts longer but still does the same thing. Is there a fan that can be replaced. Where can I get the part?

Mine do's the same thing. I think it's the color wheel, the tv can for about 30 min's and then starts to flicker really bad and the color gets bad.

Our TV does this too, along with a very loud humming noise. We can watch for about 15-20 minutes before the picture starts flashing and then just goes out. We've already replaced the lamp.

  • biggeo44 Mar 03, 2009

I have the exact same problem, and it IS the color wheel. I replaced the lamp last year at 2 years old, now the color wheel follows. My local Sharp TV authorized repairman says that this is a common problem, and Sharp sold this defective model TV through Costco.com knowing this! He has replaced 5 color wheels, ALL of which immediately failed! Sharp will no longer sell the color wheel to service technicians, just the color generator, which encloses the color wheel...cost??? $2000!!! So now, at $2300 for lamp and color generator, I would have to pay almost as much as I paid for the whole TV to have it fixed!...GREAT 'Cocstco.com white glove' deal huh?!

  • biggeo44 Mar 03, 2009

UPDATE!! In all fairness, I have to report that Costco has come through! They just called and are standing behind their sales, even though it's out of warranty. After being made aware of the problem, they are sending out their repair technicians, and promised me that the problem would be solved by any means! What terrific customer service!!! They said the symtoms of color loss, humming, whining, flickering and picture loss is indicative of the color wheel. If you purchased your Sharp 65DR650 through Costco, call the store where you bought it before putting out your own $$$!

This SUCKS! If anyone wants to cannibalize my tv for parts, in the greater seattle area, it is up for grabs. Just email al976@yahoo.com.

Flickering/jumping picture

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. TV WAS FINE UNTIL A FEW MONTHS AGO. OF COURSE ITS OUT OF WARRANTY. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ, AND BEEN TOLD, IT IS THE POWER SUPPLY TO THE UNIT. IT IS DEFECTIVE, OR IT OVERHEATS AND TRIES TO SHUT DOWN. A LAW SUIT IS IN PROGRESS AGAINST WESTINGHOUSE TO RESOLVE THIS MATTER. KINDA REMINDS ME OF THE XBOX 360'S WHEN THEY CAME OUT. ALL YOU CAN DO IS TAKE IT IN FOR SERVICE. OR, YOU CAN KEEP TURNING IT ON AND OFF, LIKE I DO. I HAVE HAD THIS TV ON ALL NIGHT BEFORE WITH NO PROBLEMS. AS SOON AS I START CHANGING STATIONS, OUT IT GOES. GOOD LUCK. WESTINGHOUSE WILL NOT EVEN EMAIL ME. I HAVE TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO CONTACT THEM. I HAVE HEARD FROM THE LAW FIRM IN CALIFORNIA THAT IS GOING AFTER THEM. GO ONLINE, AND JOIN THE CRUSADE.

The TV picture keeps jumping/flicking. All effort to fine tune it was fruitless. Do you reckon if I have the remote control, that might be helpful?

The jumping and flicking/flickering of the picture happens when there is asynchronization/mismatch in the frequencies. This should be adjustable by coarse tuning and fine tuning.

Flickering and Jumping Picture

The problem in your tv is not external.
The problem is in the power supplies internal filtering.
On the primary side of the power supply main board you will find
a large electrolytic capacitor very near the fuse and the primary transformer( the small one). Next to this capacitor you will find a
large 5 watt diode.( black with a silver band at one end). Next to this you will find one lone 1/4 watt resistor. This resistor in conjuction with large electrolytic capacitor is responcible for the internal filtering of the high voltage side of the board. As your unit heats up( anywhere fron 5 to 30 mins) you will notice horizontal
flickering and prior to that red or green or even purple pixelation.
Check this 1/4 watt resistor for dark discoloration and or a bad solder joint on the solder side of the board. This resistor
is directly responcible for controlling the bias current to the high voltage regulators for the 160 volts DC. At no time should you handle or troubleshoot this board with the line plug in.
Even when this board is powered down that capacitor still holds a charge for up to an hour and can knock your you know what
in your sock. If you do not feel comfortable please take the board to someone else. Hope this helps.
