Dell 19" flat panel moniter

Hi! Thank you for responding - I have a chance to buy

a 19" flat panel at a really good price, but they say there

is a 1/2" long 'scratch' that is approx the depth of a needle.

I didn't ask them how it happened. I can though, if it's important.

I'm going to go look at it today. They say it's in the right

    lower corner. I'm concerned about:

1.) leakage of any extra emf's? Anything that could be harmful?

2.) could this damage progress on it's own to affect quality of the picture?

3.) How is this usually repaired?

Thank you so much for your time

If the scratch is in the frame surrounding the viewing area and the monitor still works, I wouldn't worry about it. However, if the scratch was caused by a drop, it is possible that an intermittent connection will eventually develop and make the monitor non-functional. See if you can get the seller to guarantee against it being "dead on installation".

To address your specific questions:

(1) No need to worry about electromagnetic leakage--LCD monitors don't work the same as CRTs (and even if they did, the scratch would have to be on the inner surface of the screen to allow for even the most minor chance of any radiation).

(2) If the scratch is all the way through the glass, the damage will likely get worse. If it's just a surface scratch, the risk to the picture is from any other damage that may have occurred internally along with the scratch (see the first paragraph, above).

(3) If the scratch is in the display area, make sure it doesn't significantly impair your viewing experience. It's not worth the time or money it would take to repair the cosmetic damage, so if you can't live with its continued presence, I'd pass on this offer.

In summary, if the display looks and works good and is a fabulous deal, then it's probably worth a shot. However, if the scratch is distracting or there are ANY picture quality problems that seem to be related (dead or stuck pixels, flickering, etc.) I'd approach it with extreme caution.

NOT a Dell Inspiron One 19 Service Manual, but may help you in disassembling yours, to replace the LCD screen,

With this style, as most all-in-one desktops; you have to remove the Stand, Back Cover, etc, to get to the Display Bezel. Then screws are removed around the Display Bezel, and access to the LCD screen.

You NEED to wear an ESD wrist strap, and connect it to a good ground source. Average cost is $3 to $6.
