First check the DISP button to see if you accidentally hit it. If that's not the problem, take a picture with the camera and download it to your PC. If the picture is also black, then
the problem is probably a defective CCD imager. Don't fret, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:
