Question about Dell Dimension 2400 PC Desktop

2 Answers

Insufficient Memory I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with Windows XP (SP 2). I just bought McAfee Virus Scan Plus with Site Advisor & it won't let me install it due to "insufficient memory." I have run disk defragmenter, CCleaner to get rid of junk files, two Registry Cleaners & another disk clean up program from the internet, and STILL getting the error message. What can I do?! I don't think I can take this program back to Target for a refund.

Consider this. Your dell came with 512Mb of memory. The dell video card is integrated which means it uses your system memory to function. There are three choices that I can recommend. 1st. Enter your bios & reduce the amount of memory going to your video card. 2nd. You can add a PCI video card which would give you back your system memory. Lastly.
Which is the better choice. Buy another 512Mb Dimm of memory & add it to your PC. This will bring you up to the max memory your Dell can take, 1BG. You can check these two links & pick between them if you choose.
Link One: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=427379&body=MAIN#detailspecs
Or
http://stores.channeladvisor.com/Arch-Memory-Electronics/items/item.aspx?itemid=1884786
Either memory should run just fine & you do not have to try returning McAfee.
Just in case I'm including a link to a PCI video card list.

Hope this helps you decide! Luck.

Dear Sir

Insufficient Memory means the RAM . Please let me know How Much ram you have. By clicking task manager within that performance tab, you can view how much being utilised etc.
for better performance you should have minimum of 256 MB.
Best Regards

Dell dimension 2400 network adapter driver

The Dell Dimension 2400 drivers are available here: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/product/dimension-2400 . Use another computer to visit the site and make sure that Microsoft XP shows in the OS search drop down. Expand the section labeled Network. The wired network adapter is a Broadcom 4401. The direct link to the latest driver (V. 3.63 released 8/5/2003) page is http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/dimension-2400?driverId=R64645&osCode=WW1&fileId=2731129724&languageCode=en&categoryId=NI .

A more recent driver for XP is available from Broadcom at: http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/4401.php . Select the driver for the 32-bit version for XP.

I hope this helps.

16 minutes from welcome screen to destop icon loading on Windows xp with sp3.Just started happening

1) How long have you have the SP/3 update? Caused a LOT of problems there for a while.
May still be doing it.

I'll just stick with Service Pack II.
(Microsoft has had a backdoor since Windows NT anyway.
Plus my anti-malware programs, and a virtual desktop; does just fine)

2) The two leading causes of desktop computer failure is;
A) Computer is dirty inside
B) Power Supply is bad.

How about we start with looking inside the computer?
Plus, do you know about Anti-Static Procedures?
And, what is the model name, and model number of that Dell?

Please post back in a Comment.

Reinstalled Windows XP on an old computer (DELL Dimension 2400) and the monitor won't display above basic resolution. Downloaded and reinstalled the monitor driver and still no good. Opened up START

According to the Dell Support web site the Dell Dimension 2400 has a built in Intel 3D extreme graphics adapter, assuming you are using this and not a PCI graphics card.

Go to the Intel Download Centre and run their Intel Driver Update Utility which will automatically scan your system for updated drivers for any installed or integrated Intel devices.

If the Intel Utility identifies an updated driver for your graphics adapter then download and install that which should enable you to configure a higher resolution for your display.

I have a dell dimesion 2300. I Just bought a dell dimesion 2400 on amazon.com it has windows xp on it and it came with no disk. can I install my dell 2300 windows xp operation cd on the 2400 if I ever need...

Generally, yes, if it's the same version, (e.g., "Home Edition, or "Professional", etc. Then the Operating System disk should get you going well enough to start all the necessary updates You may need to go to Dell and download the model specific driver files, updates, etc. to get everything !00%
Make sure you have the right Microsoft Product key for the installation.
Best thing you can do is back up your system and keep it somewhere separate, with all this info. There are many good free utilities for system specs., such as Belarc Advisor. It's easier to fix a broken system when you can automatically put everything right from backups, where ever possible. You are thinking ahead, instead of after a disaster!
Good luck.!

I have hopelessly slow windows xp, Dell Dimension 2400, 2.52GHz, 384 MB of RAM [2002, owned since 2004] Have deleted all invisible startups, run a clean virus scan, run cleanup/cleandisk, disk...

Hi,

It makes no wonder that the machines slow with only having 384MB of RAM installed.

If you were to max out the memory capacity of the machine which i suspect is DDR SDRAM and probably has a maximum of 2GB as this would make the machine much faster that what it is now.

384MB of RAM is just not good enough to run XP properly these days.

If the machine is still in good working order (apart from it being slow) then you could upgrade the RAM.

Regards.

Computer is very slow.

McAfee virus software is a memory hog. You need to add more memory to your pc. It uses pc3200 memory. This computer has a memory capacity of 4gigabytes. The memory slots are numbered this way......starting from the memory slot closest to the processor>
one, three, two, four. 1 and 2 work together, 3 and 4 work together. So if you buy just 2 gigabytes......put them in 1 and 2. This will help. Sounds like the virus software is doing a full system scan....you could do a "quick"scan and do a "full" scan once a week....

This is a classic symptom of a virus. Scan your system even if you are able to restore it, and I would scan while NOT connected to the net.

When you said "I think its a memory problem" your right, you need more of it. Try adding more RAM. It's really cheap now a days, especially for the 2400. Memory is available everywhere. While this is not an endorsement of their site, Computer Memory Outlet.com has about the cheapest RAM available and they are reputable and reliable and orders usually ship next day. I personally get all my memory from them.

anaanymous

p.s. They have an on site utility that will scan your computer and tell you the exact RAM you need and the maximum RAM you can add
