Phillips plasma. red horizonal lines running thru picture

Nancy and Guest. This is caused by an overload in the Y main and buffers. If you are electronically inclined and want to fix this yourself its not hard, but it is a little pricey. There are actually two problems manifested here, the sparkles are from the y main and the lines are from the buffers trying to compensate. If you're up for the daunting task of fixing this yourself, http://www.fixya.com/support/t1625867-phillips_42

Screen is red

jmeek: unfortunately there's not much you can do about this one. it's either the red gun in the crt has shorted, because of impurity build-up, or the driver for the red gun is shorted. either way it's repair or throw away time. tv repair shops used to carry a picture tube reconditioner that would zap the color guns in the crt to burn-off the shorts. it's doubtful they would have a socket that would fit your crt, but they might. they could possibly find a replacement for the driver if it's defective. but given the low cost of lcd's, that's i would be going. be sure to recycle the monitor correctly. please don't just toss it in a dumpster. there are computer part recycler's thru-out most of the US.

I have a red and blue shadow in my picture

IT sounds like it needs to be degaused.
Before checking this, check for speakers placed by the set. this will cause it too.

The best way to avoid this situation is
  1. Don't place unshielded speakers near the set.
  2. Don't move the set while it is turned on.

The coil that is used is about $50 and can sometimes be found at industrial electronics stores. It's called a degausing coil. most TVs have a version of this built in and mutiple power on/off/ons may fix it, but don't hold your breath...

The trick is to turn the coil on with it right up to the screen. Move the coil in a big circular motion parallel to the screen as you S-L-O-W-L-Y move away from the screen. when you are as far away as you can get [about ten feet] turn the coil off. Caution. KEEP HARD DRIVES, CREDIT CARDS, AND FLOPPY DRIVES AWAY from the energized coil!

Good luck
