When I plug in the USB, the screen comes on and says the USB is connected. I can't, however, figure out how to turn the thing on. I don't even know where the power button is... I've tried holding down all of the possible buttons, and I just can't figure it out. It was given to me, so I have no instructions to work from.

I updated my Nuvi 40 with the latest software and it will not reboot into GPS mode with the usb cable connected. It used to work. I have figured out how to get it to charge with a standard USB cable: 1) Power it on.2) Press the battery icon for 8 seconds - it will enter TEST mode.3) Plug in your USB cable from the PC to the Nuvi - the screen will change to say charging.4) Press the power button 3 times rapidly - it will say Charging across the screen and it will go dim and then dark.5) To wake it up and use GPS mode while charging simply press the power button 3 times rapidly, again. Works Great!
No, it may take a little longer if you are charging through the USB port. I normally have mine plugged in while driving, it charges and is in use too.
To use GPS with USB. First turn the GPS on (without USB plugged in). Press Battery symbol on screen for about 10 seconds, a test screen will come on. Plug in the USB (bottom of screen shows USB connected). Tap EXIT to return to maps. You can now use it while USB is charging
Make sure you turn GPS off before removing the USB cable
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.
