Installing XP on a dell computer

My XP installation hangs when it gets to the copying of the files to the hard drive. The computer only allows a startup disk so I use windows 98 startup disk. This means I am trying to start installation of XP from DOS. When I type winnt the installation goes to copying files and then hangs. What is the special code I can use to get it to install by itself? (winnt /s /x)

May i ask something? How about if your installer is a non-bootable disk?

Go to a computer that works and put in your hard drive. (whivh I don't recomend unless you are a technician) Boot and install through the slave drive ie the one you put in. If you need more detailed solutions you can e-mail me at 4077mashunit@gmail.com

Try to go to bios and load bios defaults, esc then save and exit. boot from the cdrom by, tapping on F12 at dell screen. at boot menu screen, choose cdrom, press enter, when you see the message, PRESS ANY KEY T5O BOOT TO CDROM, hit any immediately, that should allow you to install xp directly from the cdrom.

From another computer build a msdos floppy disc, yes floppy disc.
I believe you computer accepts floppys does it not? and i also asume you are running xp, you can try running the startup disc and trying to check disc, but if you cannont procede, i would opt into downloading another copy of the windows and try installing through that method. If the disc dosent load, and you get that error message of the bat, another step will be waiting for you.

Will i loose pictures & other files if i format my pc

Yes you will lose all files when you format.
If you want to save your files but cannot open Windows on your computer then remove the hard drive from your computer and connect this hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter. Plug this adapter and hard drive into the USB port of a working computer, this computer will see this as an external storage device, you can then open the folders on this drive and copy/backup the various folders and files.
After you have copied/backup your files, you can install the hard drive back into your computer to format and reinstall Windows.

You haven't said what you were doing when you got these messages. Regardless, it could be a virus and because of that, I would do the following:

Obtain a second hard drive to copy to; install it in the same machine. It does not need to be bootable. Download and burn (or have a friend do it for you) a bootable CD that includes NTFS file tools, such as The Ultimate Boot CD or BartPE. Boot from the CD, then use it to copy your important files from old hard drive to new one.

This method is preferable to installing this problem hard drive in another Windoze computer because if it is a virus, you could infect that computer too. If it's your friend's computer, they won't be your friend any more after you do that!

Once you have your files copied, remove the spare hard drive, format the original one (using the same boot CD if you like) and reinstall your operating system.

When trying to reinstall windows xp, the process keeps failing during setup saying, "The file comct132.dll was not copied correctly. The file Setup on your hard drive is not a valid Windows XP system...

Click start/run Type: cmd
In the Command window type:
SFC /scannow Note the space between SFC and /scannow

You can copy/paste: SFC /scannow

Hit the Enter button
keep your xp cd handy in case you're asked to chuck it into your cd rom

The above should replace missing files and get you to the place where the install can proceed.

Let me know. __________________

How to forat the hard drive

Good day sir, hi, lets review first some of the reasons why windows xp cannot be installed on your PC, here are the possibilities :
  1. Your Windows XP CD is scratched beyoned readable. You will get prompts for missing files or files that can't be read on the CD. Get a good copy of windows XP.
  2. A memory module (ram) or some are defective, you get the blue screen with all sorts of warnings and data you can't understand and numbers you don't know. Check your ram modules. To be sure have it tested on another PC. If bad, replace it.
  3. Your memory should be aleast 128 mb or more for windows XP to install properly.
  4. Your CD/DVD drive is bad or selective of the CDs it reads, you may need to check the drive.
  5. your hard drive is bad, or has to much bad sectors near the boot area, where windows install its system and boot files, you have no choice but to replace it with a new one, or else you cannot format the old one no matter how.
Thats it, if I miss something, let me know, send me error messages to diagnose it properly.

When installing XP, you could always go into Bios and switch Sata to Legacy mode. That will allow you to install XP. Later you could try installing the SATA drivers, and switch the Bios back to ACH1 mode (or whatever it was called). I had no luck with the latter, as there is a bit of a 'Catch 22' as Device manager does not proffer that option when the drive is in Legacy mode. I gave up and now just run it in Legacy mode. In spite of what the manual says, you will find that eSata works fine in that mode.

Missing or corrupt hal.dll file, so can't boot the hard drive

Hey,

Please use the recovery discs or windows installation cd.

To either perform a full system restore with the recovery discs.
Or to perform a repair installation with the windows installation cd.

Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup.
Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Thanks and good luck.
Ekse
