Question about Brother EM-430 Typewriter
The solution that worked for me is relatively simple. Close the top flap (where you can access the carriage)...this action will automatically 'turn off' the bale safety switch inside. And then the carriage should 'operate' and type for you! It is a simple 'mistake' that can happen to the best of people...even me.

Check to see if you are in proportional spacing, if so move switch to 10 or 12

This is a common problem. This generally happens when a child plays with the machine or someone thinks they will make the machine work better by cleaning out the carriage compartment.
Inside the carriage compartment (where the ribbon and print wheel are) in the right side of the metal frame there is a small piece of metal (a tab) that sticks out. When you power on the machine the typewriter does something called “Homing.” What this means is, all that dancing that happens when you turn it on is that the sensors are putting everything to a known state. When the carriage goes to the right side the tab hits a switch inside the carriage and that puts the print wheel in Home Position.
Sometimes the tab gets slightly bent which caused print wheel HOME to be incorrectly set. To correct this, the tab needs to be at 90 degrees to the frame. To correct this just power off the machine push the carriage out of the way (to the lest side of the compartment). And slightly bend the tab either towards or away from the keyboard. Then turn on the typewriter test it, it might take a couple of tries.
Normally it’s only very lightly out of square so don’t get carried away. I have ***** seen the tab snapped off but it could happen.
