The solution that worked for me is relatively simple. Close the top flap (where you can access the carriage)...this action will automatically 'turn off' the bale safety switch inside. And then the carriage should 'operate' and type for you! It is a simple 'mistake' that can happen to the best of people...even me.

Check to see if you are in proportional spacing, if so move switch to 10 or 12

This is a common problem. This generally happens when a child plays with the machine or someone thinks they will make the machine work better by cleaning out the carriage compartment.

Inside the carriage compartment (where the ribbon and print wheel are) in the right side of the metal frame there is a small piece of metal (a tab) that sticks out. When you power on the machine the typewriter does something called “Homing.” What this means is, all that dancing that happens when you turn it on is that the sensors are putting everything to a known state. When the carriage goes to the right side the tab hits a switch inside the carriage and that puts the print wheel in Home Position.

Sometimes the tab gets slightly bent which caused print wheel HOME to be incorrectly set. To correct this, the tab needs to be at 90 degrees to the frame. To correct this just power off the machine push the carriage out of the way (to the lest side of the compartment). And slightly bend the tab either towards or away from the keyboard. Then turn on the typewriter test it, it might take a couple of tries.

Normally it’s only very lightly out of square so don’t get carried away. I have ***** seen the tab snapped off but it could happen.

How to write smaller letters

Brother typewriters usually come with a Brougham style printwheel. You will need to buy a different printwheel that has a smaller font, like a Prestige Elite. You can call Brother at 877-brother or you may be able to order one from staples or office depot.

I am cosidering purchasing a Brother AX430 as it is cheaper than AX100 is there much diference and how old is it. Can you obtain printing and correcting ribbons.

I am not a big fan of Brother T/W's. They have more problems than most and parts are hard to get.
I would suggest a Wheelwriter they are very serviceable, parts ans supplies readily available and they are reasonable.

I don't know why the keyboard for the typewriter is tying different symbols and why when i press a letter that i want, i get a different letter?

The most common problem is the print wheel is out of place. Turn the machine off and reseat the print wheel and turn it back on. If this does not fix it you have real problems.

I'm trying to type on this, but it's not typing the letters I am touching. It types a different letter than I press.

turn machine off for 15 or so seconds and turn back on. if that doesn't work, remove the daisy wheel and inspect the spokes the letters are on. look for bent or broken spokes.

When we try typing, the letters we press are not what comes out. completely different letters, not sure how to correct.

Check to see if the pitch selection is in PS proportional space. If not the homing pawl spring is probably broken. DickyO

Different letters despite what I am typing...

look for kb1 and kb 2 or your pitch is selected at ps instead of 10 or 12
