Question about Saeco Magic De Luxe Espresso Machine

Saeco Magic De Luxe - hot water / steam but no coffe through the brew group

We've had our Saeco Magic De Luxe for about 4-5 years and have loved it. We've come to rely on it for our coffee fix at least 3 or 4 times a day. I swear we've been really great owners and have been vigilant about descaling when it's due, along with cleaning the brew group and the grinder on the recommended schedule. Yesterday, however, it decide that it was not going to cooperate. It grinds the coffee, dumps it into the brew group but water is not getting to the brew group.

Here are the troubleshooting steps we've taken so far:
1) Descaled - although it was earlier than the recommended schedule
2) Hot water / steam comes out of the steam tube so we know the pump is working and the heater/boiler is working
3) Watched with the door open (via pushing the metal latch) while pushing the brew button to see if any water spills out on the brew group. Water never even makes it to the brew group and it ends up dumping dry, unused grounds into the dregs box so this test didn't really tell us much of anything.
4) After we try to run it in normal mode (and don't get anything) we do have to prime the circuit via opening the hot water/steam wand and WOW...does it initially pump out the water.

Bottomline, the water seems to be backed up somewhere between Point A (the tank) and Point B (the brew group).

Obviously we'd love to have a solution to this. Barring that how do you take the main case / cover off this machine for a more thorough inner inspection of the water tubes that run to the brew group from the boiler without accidentally disconnecting some other inner part?

We have contacted a local service shop and they charge $50+tax to look at it. If they can fix it that $$ goes toward the repair. We may have to go that route.

I found the problem. The tube / probe that shoots the water into the port in the brew group broke off and that was stuck in the brew group port.

I'm not sure what that part is called but the whole thing will have to be replaced. I'll try to take some pictures and add them here just in case anyone knows how to replace that part.

Thanks Pierre. That's the right piece (the boiler valve). We've ordered the part for $14.99 and are going to try to use the method you describe to install it....wondered about ordering two just in case it happens to be a weak part of the machine in general (although this one has lasted us a few years for sure). I hope we don't have to remove the boiler.

Hey Pierre - I hope you're still monitoring this one. We FINALLY received the replacement boiler valve. Now we need to figure out how to remove the right wall of the machine without loosening or unscrewing unnecessary parts. E.g. there are screws that hold the boiler valve to the wall of the machine but if you accidentally unscrew these the boiler valve just "floats loosely" behind that wall. Instead what we need to understand is how to take the machine apart (which screws to take off) to get to the boiler and the boiler valve and get our machine working again. We have the tech diagrams but honestly...they're a bit confusing. Thanks much for any information you can provide!

Pierre - great instructions. I've taken the grinder out before so that part I know. I won't be able to try the rest of this until after dinner Pacific Time (it's 1:46pm). I believe replacement seals came with the new parts. I will post again after I've tried this but it all makes sense.

pierre - so far so good. One last (?) question. Where does the c-clip go? The little "[" shaped piece of plastic?

  • AJ Fro Feb 24, 2008

That's the one and we figured that out. We're rocking and rolling. Thanks much for your help Pierre. You helped get us back online.

Steam comes from wand when set to dispense water.

Check the connection to the boiler from the pump, there is no water going to the boiler. Try this test, remove the brew unit you will see a white plastic valve behind it, carefully lift the small lever on the valve(HOT WATER), if water sprays, then the problen is at the brew unit, if no water then the boiler inlet or outlet is clogged.

I have a Saeco Magic De Luxe. I am having a problem intermittent

Could be the pump not providing enough pressure to force the water through the coffee. When using beans or preground, can you still hear the pump function?

Expresso comes out warm not hot what is problem

The magic delux has only one boiler so if you are getting hot water and steam, then it could be that the cup used to brew into is taking the heat from your espresso, trly warming up the cup before brewing into.

Try setting the grind to the coarsest setting, if you still have the same problem, check the wire connections to the board, it might have been reversed.

Water pump?

If you could brewer coffee or get hot water out of the steam wand then it could be the one way valve on the bottom of the water tank. If you are running the pump output into a glass then it is probably scaled up in the boiler.

Flashing brew group light

Brew group light is lighting. Could be a number of things....

Machine may need to be primed. Try turning on the steam valve and let some water threw. See if that helps.

If you can't get the brew drive out, its jammed. You could try unplugging it for about a day, and then plugging it in, sometimes it will reset it self. Else it has to be brought back in, should take 5 minutes to do.

It could also be the descaler light popped on. hold down the steam button and it may turn off.

It could also be a sensor that wasn't put back properly.

Its hard to really say, the light diagnostic system for magic's isn't the best.

Filter in saeco magic delux

little magnet keeps that red light from coming on.

magnets probably gone bad, need to buy a new water tank. As far as i know saeco does not sell the magnets seperate.

could also be a blockage sending the machine into alarm.
