It worked fine yesterday. I never had a problem in 31/2 yrs. today it is dead. it is as though it is not plugged in, but it is and I've checked all power issues (the breaker, the plug to wall/outlet work) other things work for this power source, even changed the power cord (e-machines' suggestion). No fan, no light, no nothing. How do I know if I should replace the power supply or if the motherboard is the problem? Any suggestions, or should I just go buy a new one? If the motherboard is out, have I lost all data, photos, etc? any help is much appreciated!
Dear asksforhelp,
As u have told that u have change the power cord then the second thing u can try that check the SMPS is it working or not to check this u have to know that where is the SMPS where u pluged in the power cord in the cpu that thing is SMPS check wether the SMPS fan moving or not if no then u have to replace the SMPS if it is working then u have check wether the mother Board get the power supply or not check the 12 pin power connector insert it in mother Board if still it not working then it is definatly problem with u r Mother Board. So it is better for u that to go for New One.
With the power off on the power supply, you can reach inside the case and find the 20/24 pin main power cable to the mainboard. Disconnect that, and find the green wire, which should be the fourth down on one side. Turn the main power switch on on the power supply, then use a paperclip to short the pin on the green signal wire to one of the black wires next to it. If the power supply fans come on, the problem is the main board or processor. If it does nothing, the power supply is the fault.
Make sure you get the right wire, there should be only one green one, and all of the black wires are the same, so any one of them will work.
If the motherboard is the problem and you replace the PC, you can install your old hard drive in the new computer and access your files.
