Emachine T2958 will not turn on - has no power

It worked fine yesterday. I never had a problem in 31/2 yrs. today it is dead. it is as though it is not plugged in, but it is and I've checked all power issues (the breaker, the plug to wall/outlet work) other things work for this power source, even changed the power cord (e-machines' suggestion). No fan, no light, no nothing. How do I know if I should replace the power supply or if the motherboard is the problem? Any suggestions, or should I just go buy a new one? If the motherboard is out, have I lost all data, photos, etc? any help is much appreciated!

Same problem, and when I jump it the DVD rom will open and the main fan will come on but none of the others. Is this still the mother board?

With the power off on the power supply, you can reach inside the case and find the 20/24 pin main power cable to the mainboard. Disconnect that, and find the green wire, which should be the fourth down on one side. Turn the main power switch on on the power supply, then use a paperclip to short the pin on the green signal wire to one of the black wires next to it. If the power supply fans come on, the problem is the main board or processor. If it does nothing, the power supply is the fault.

Make sure you get the right wire, there should be only one green one, and all of the black wires are the same, so any one of them will work.

If the motherboard is the problem and you replace the PC, you can install your old hard drive in the new computer and access your files.

TomTom Go730 worked great yesterday, is a brick today. Battery charged, reset per TT website instructions, nothing. Any suggestions?

not much to do with that unit, check with a volt meter to verify that power is present at the plug cord charging, if all your efforts fail and the unit is dead your trouble is in the unit itself, this unit is not serviceable by any one other than one with knowledge and equipment to repair this unit, check for warranty if not obtain a new one,,,?Sorry

My laptop is completely dead, fine yesterday. Today no lights, sounds nothing. I tried removing the battery , unplugging no response. Thanks,

Remove the battery for at least 3 minutes... Then put it back and then plug in the charger and switch on the charger. If the battery is completely drained, it would take a while for the charging to initiate. Please have patience and leave it on charging even though without the charging indication for at least an hour. After that still if the charging indicator doesn't lit, then its definitely your charger or laptop. You will need to take it to a service centre in that case.

I want to to return my emachine to factory settings..Have the T2958 ver 1.1 restore dvd. Won't auto run- I click on the icon and its just text. Is that a command prompt?

you will need to restart the computer and boot off the restore dvd.
This is done outside of the operating system.

When computer is first turned on keep hitting f10 untill you get the boot menu up, choose the dvd drive and it should work for you.

Worked fine yesterday - will not turn on today - kitchen

When you say the machine is dead do you mean you are getting no LED lights at all or do you mean it is not booting up? No power and no post are two different things. With no power you get absolutely nothing at all. With no post you may have some LED lights but nothing comes up on the screen. You said power and power supply tested ok. How are you testing it? I need more info please.

Loose wires inside my t2958 emachine , need a schematic website

Most of the extra wire are for expansion purposes and since most computers have different accessories,a wiring schematic may not help at all.
If you are just talking about the wire from the power supply box,I can help.

Worked fine yesterday, today zilch !!

One computer I fixed had its internal power regulation confused. With the AC adapter plugged in, holding the power switch down for twelve seconds, then pressing it again, switched it back on. This sort of problem can come from a variety of causes, though. There is an internal power distribution chip which could have received a static electric shock or power surge and gotten cooked. The RAM could have gone bad. The socket where the adapter plugs into the computer could have been cracked loose. Check the power switch and then RAM first, and write more if that doesn't fix it.

Emachine t2742 I also have a wiring problem!

gtater,
It's ironic that you ask me this question today-- i am just now carrying in another eMachine computer to fix. Anyway, unfortunately I do not have one that is the same model as yours (T2742). However, I did some quick research and found that yours has the same exact motherboard as the T2898 which I made the diagram for!

The following eMachine models share the same motherboard (and thus the same front panel layout):
T2742 T2796 T2798 T2824 T2885 D2823 T2862 T2896 T2898 T2958

For further reference, I would like to share this diagram for the eMachines T6544 in case someone else may need this model. This is the computer I just carried in... might as well share.

By the way, the power switch doesn't need to be oriented any particular way (positive and negative), which is why the switches are not labeled as + or -. Switches can be wired either way and they will work the same.

Hope this helps.
