Question about Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox III MP3 Player

2 Answers

My Creative Nomad Jukebox III will not start. At best, I can get to the EAX screen: this is accompanied by some whirring and clicking (HDD activity?) and then it freezes. On one occasion, it got past this hurdle and reached about half-way through the "rebuilding library" phase, at which point it failed. (I have posted a query like this before but when I search your site for answers to queries on Creative Nomad Jukebox III, I seem to get all the queries asked on all products).

I had a failed JB III that acted the same way. I thought it was the hard drive, but turns out it was the motherboard in the player. I bought a used one on EBAY, then transferred my old HDD to the new one (the JB III uses a standard notebook hard drive).

If you're not worried about losing your songs, you can remove the HDD, get a PATA-to-USB external HDD adapter (less than $10 on sale), and reformat the drive, and test the drive to make sure it's sound. If it is, then you have a new portable hard drive. Unfortunately, your JB III is now an empty shell.

Before you do anything drastic, make sure you've got the latest drivers installed from Creative. Get them here.

I found this procedure from Creative that allows you to fully reset/scan your player. Carefully follow these instructions here:
    Creative Jukebox 3

    1. Remove the battery cover

    2. Partially remove the battery

    3. Press and hold STOP button

    4. Slide the battery back into position - the unit should power on.

    5. When the CREATIVE logo appears on the display, release the STOP button then immediately press and release the PLAY button.

    6. The following options will appear on the display:

    • Clean Up (Performs a disk scan on the players hard disk)

    • Format All (Formats the players hard disk - Note: all contents will be lost)

    • Reload Firmware (Reloads the Operating System on the Jukebox. Note: Reloading your OS, will not effect the contents of the files stored on your Jukebox Zen. Select this option ONLY if you have access to a PC and you have downloaded the necessary firmware to install.)

    • Reboot (Reboots the device).

Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Extra

Whirring noise = bad, probably needs to be replaced, BUT:
Uninstall everything from your PC, reboot, reinstall driver and the Explorer (I do not use MediaSource, only the Explorer).

If it didn't work out follow these steps:

1. Uninstall Creative Media Source and all related software.
2. Install the driver. In the installation CD the driver is usually in \Drivers\English
3. Turn on the Nomad an connect it to the PC.
4. Install MediaSource(the program requires that you have the nomad connected while installing)
5. Install MediaSource plugin
6. Try transferring files.

If you?re still running into problem know that there are other programs capable of handling MediaSource?s functions, such as - Portable Audio Devices Power Toy , NomadSync, Real player, and there?s also a Zen plugin for the Winamp.

Good luck!

Have you tried pushing the reset button on the side as you power it up?

It's possible that you need to replace the hard drive or reload the firmware. Or both.

Some Songs Play Too Slow

This sounds like it may be realted to the "Time Scaling" feature, which is part of the "EAX" settings. Disable EAX and/or the Time Scaling feature and see if this helps.
