Sounds like dirty or clogged print heads. Take out the cartridges and clean them with a cotton tip swab and rubbing alcohol. allow a few min to dry and try again if it continues, replace the cartridge.

I get a white line on the printed pages on my Brother MFC4800. The line is about 5mm wide and runs down the left hand side of the paper, cutting through the type. Can you help please

Try cleaning the optics and the charge corona. If you do not have the operators manual which outlines the proceedure, go to www.welcome.solutions.brother.com. The proceedure is in the CLEANING documentation. Make sure the wire cleaner is pushed all the way back to its home position. Otherwise, the white line may return if the cleaner is left in the expoure path. IF THE WHITE LINE APPEARS ON PRINTED PAGES GENERATED BY YOUR COMPUTER, THE WIRE CLEANER IS THE MOST LIKELY CAUSE.. IF THE WHITE LINE APPEARS ON PRINTS THAT WERE SCANNED USING THE BROTHER SCANNER, THE OPTICS MAY BE SMUDGED. LOOK FOR CORRECTION FLUID ON THE GLASS **** (THE NARROW SCAN GLASS). THIS IS THE USUAL CAUSE.

Clean the print nozzles as follows:
  1. Go to Start, Programs, Lexmark, Lexmark Solution Center (or Lexmark Control Program) and select the Cartridges tab.
  2. Select Cartridge Nozzles (or Clean Print Nozzles).
  3. Check the diagonal lines above and below the solid horizontal lines. The diagonal lines should be continuously solid from left to right, with no gaps.
  4. If there are gaps at the top that diminish at the bottom, run the Clean Print Nozzle page a few more times. If the gaps are gone, the Clean Print Nozzle page has probably resolved the problem.
  5. If the gaps still exist, you should unblock ("wick") the cartridges. See How to Unblock/Wick the Cartridge Nozzles.

Try changing the driver settings to a higher or lower quality output. If the problem changes it would suggest that the alignment is till not quite right. This sounds like a BiDirectional mis-alignment issue. You could also try my under head cleaning routine, which is cheap and easy and solves many problems.
