Right when i turn my xbox 360 on it get the 3 red rings then switches to the 2 red rings and then the fan speeds up and then the fan turns off :( hlp me......o ya by the way this is happening after i tryed fixing my original 3rrod problem myself....i reaplied the thermal compound to the cpu and gpu and replaced the xclamps with a screw and a nilon washer.
The 2 red rings error is an overheat problem. Something you did when you attempted the previous repair has prevented the 360 from cooling properly. I suggest having a professional examine your machine.

There is a quick way to get it working but will only last 2-3 days . Wrap a big towel round console covering all fan vents etc . Turn console on leave for 20 mins. Turn off then should work.
This is called Red Ring of Death or RROD by the community, it means that the CPU or GPU or both have a bad solder joint, that is caused from rapid heating and cooling from poor cooling design of the xbox 360. To fix it is pretty simple. Follow these instructions to take apart your 360: http://www.rrodfix.com/how-to-take-apart-the-microsoft-xbox-360-game-console.html Stop once you've removed the dvd drive. Now Remove the fans from the back, and set them on the heatsink on the right the flat one, and make sure they are pointing where the air is going up. Put a peice of of carboard or plastic something non conductive in between the heatsinks to prevent airflow from the fans. Turn on the 360, and leave it til it goes from 3 rings to 2 rings, wait 3 minutes, then switch the fan over to the other side. Wait about as long as you did for the other one then turn off the 360. Wait 1 hour for the 360 to cool off. DO NOT move the 360 while it is cooling down durning this period or you will permantly ruin it, the solder is being reflowed. After an hour, put the fans back, and turn the 360 on, it should work. Once its working, I recommend doing a 12 volt mod on the fans to prevent RROD from happening again, and changing out the thermal paste with artic silver 5.

If before it shutdowns it has 2 red light its a Overheating issue, if still under warrenty send it back to microsoft or... you can, open it up by following this guide: .

Stop once you've removed the dvd drive. Get a can of air, make sure its all aired out, and you hold the can horizontal don't tilt it, and short bursts. Once thats done. If you want to make sure it never overheats you can do whats called a 12v mod on the 360 it forces the fans to run at full speed. Now if you have a slim you just snip the grey wire. If its a older model you get the fans, and wire it up to a external 12v 1amp ac to dc adapter or solder it to this point :http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/mods/360-12V-fan-Mod.htm this link also shows what wires are postive and negative. And I would also suggest changing the thermal paste out for some better stuff like artic silver five. Now if you're getting Red Ring of Death which is 3 red lights you need to follow this guide :This is called Red Ring of Death or RROD by the community, it means that

The XBOX has a reported 54.2% failure rate which makes the XBOX 360 gaming consoles' worst "lemon" to date. If you find yourself with the red flashing lights error,
-->
follow this guide to try and pinpoint the problem with your XBOX 360.
1 Red Ring = Serious Hardware Failure I f your XBOX 360 has a 1 red flashing light error, you're more than likely in big trouble. The 1 flashing red ring of light can be due to GPU or CPU failure, RAM overheating, a DVD drive error, or some serious problem with your Xbox 360's internal components. The most common 1 flashing red ring lights error is the E74 error. The E74 error is no easy fix for the Xbox 360 and usually has to be repaired by the manufacturer [though some have managed to repair it with the heat gun trick - but be careful]
2 Red Rings = Overheating Mostly all red flashing lights on the Xbox 360 rings are due to overheating in some way or other, but the 2 red rings singles out overheating as the main issue. When doing the X-Clamp fix the 2 red rings are required to fix the Xbox 360 by overheating the CPU. If you get this Xbox 360 error without doing the X-Clamp fix, you probably just need to let your Xbox 360 cool down for a few hours. Make sure that all vents aren't blocked off and that your Xbox fans are working properly in order to repair this problem.
3 Red Rings = Basic Hardware Failure The most common error on the Xbox 360 is the 3 red rings - also known as the Red Rings of Death (RRoD). This flashing lights problem is the main cause of Xbox 360's 54.2% failure rate. The 3 red flashing lights can be due to lots of different errors but is mainly due to the X-Clamps in your Xbox 360 and overheating. Fortunately, lots of people were able to fix this issue using the X-Clamp and heat gun fix. Follow this list of error codes to find out the real issue with the 3 red rings because there are quite a few of them.
for the red rings fix rap your xbox in two blankets turn on xbox wait till it shuts it self off wait for 35 min and you wount have any more problems i did that to mine over 2 years ago and i have not had any problems yet brian
Your xbox is overheating.
1. Let your Xbox 360 console cool. You may have to wait several hours for your console to cool enough. Don't turn on your Xbox 360 console when the console is hot.2. Verify that your Xbox 360 console has enough ventilation and that the fans are operating.3. If the two lights continue to flash after trying the above steps, you'll need to contact Xbox Customer Support.
