JBL PB12 Subwoofer Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jan 21, 2010

I have a PB12 that is very distorted. I pull the amp and started checking out parts. There are a bunch of 2 watt metal oxide resistors and they are colored coded indicating 100 phms, but I get all kinds of strange readings and pulling several los they check as 9-10K. What are they suppose to be? Bruce

Found a schematic finally- they are suppose to be 10K (as they measure)not the 1K they are marked. Since JBL no longer services thes and HK says no part are available how can you have a "professional" fix it. not the most helpful suggestion I have ever gotten.

What a dick. I have been building audio equipment for 40 years. The color code on the reistors is wrong They are brown black brown (the 2 brown rings are identical) The problem with the powr amp module is that it is house marked. I found a complete manual on-line and the amp moduleis the problem. I just love reading shit from idiots who take snipes at people.

  • Anonymous Jan 24, 2010

First, it is not mine. Second the Japanese build some of the finest audio equipment in the world. Third, if you want to complain go ahead theis site hasn't been any help with anything, as it seems it is just place where losers like you hang out and harass people, looking all around there seems to be nothing, here of any value. BTY RS hasn't been in the real parts business for many years. NTE replacment parts are pretty bad quality and don't work well in many applications. You should really try Digikey, or Mouser, but there might be a problem, since it is pretty obvious you really don't have a job,nor do you have a clue.

You need to replace the output amp as well as the resistors you mentioned. go to rad shack and get a resistor color code guide as well as power supply troubleshooting book soldering Iron, Its best to have a pro do it>

  • Anonymous Jan 23, 2010

Well you obviously don't know how to read a color code, and a pro would be able to locate parts, even stock them. I know I have plenty of parts that are "discontinued" if not, I can use my cross-reference guide to find NTE sub parts. By the way JBL would rather have you buy new sub and they dont sell some specialized parts to amateurs. Please refrain from sending any more messages as they will go to spam

Building them and fixing them are two different things, as far as brown rings, yours is the one thats sore! ha ha by the way I did tell you the amp was the problem not your brown "rings" moron. another thing, if you know about audio why would you buy that chinese made piece of ****? quit being cheap and buy something with quality built into it. I will report you to the moderators for you abusiveness and I hope that piece of garbage catches on fire! ---hole!!!!!

I have a jvc rx-518v amplifier with a burned out resistor on the imput board (r474) and diode (d474). They are severely overheated and the identifiers are gone, but the rest appears functioning. Any clue...

R474 should be a 18Ohm 2 watt metal oxide resistor part no. QRG022J-180AF
See page 2-9
and D474 is a zener diode part no. MTZ12JC see page 2-8.

How many watts per channel in a technical pro rx55uribt 1500w reciever

What is in a Watt.
Although Watt should be a dimension of power (current times Voltage) most manufactures give numbers you can't use. They always speak of maximum power. That number only can be reached in a laboratory and is measured on a clean resistor. They try the lowest resistor (not an impedance) the amplifier can work with, without blowing the end stage.
Then they put a free marge to tell you it should have a musical power of xxxx Watts. The output differs for speakers of 2 ohm, 4 ohm or 8 ohm. But there is not one speaker with an impedance over the whole audio spectrum.
Just read something over audio and power amplifiers.
The output has nothing to do with the quality of the sound. I have heard 15 Watt amplifiers perform hundred times better then some kilowatt amps.
Even if the manufacture says the amp is 1500 w it could be within legal limits and fir the amp is measured and can't deliver 100 watts of real power nobody can do a thing, because the watts could be the musical power. and that is a free invented non measurable measure. I don't even want to start over distortion, because the cheaper amps do produce more distortion, than music. If you use it for a sub woofer that is no problem, because you feel more than you hear.

Sorry for this big story and not saying what the real output is, because nowadays nobody bothers measuring amps like this.
The more serous audio magazines, will put some test about amps, and you should read one or two test to know what I mean about the worth of watts in audio.

HOW TO REPAIR A DAMAGED JBL PB12 it just stopped working, somebody told me it was unfixable due the part are very hard to get I guess the internal amplifier got broken

There is a quick way to find out if the parts are hard to get. Look inside a make a note of the IC and Transistor numbers. Don't bother with the resistors and caps. Put the numbers into Google and see what comes up.

Amp repair advice

check on the board to see if there is a resistor that looks similar, 90% of amps amps are matched in there design, meaning the left side is usally a carbon copy of the right, so if you look at one side and there is a resistor that looks like it's in the same spot on the other side, good chance thats the same one, read the colors off the one thats not burnt up. resistors come in different wattages,1/8,1/4 1/2 up to 10 watts, each wattage is a different size, most of the ones you see in the amp are 1/4 watt but some are 1/2 and 1/8. some on the output are 2 to 5 watt, but those are generally 10-18 mm in length, they are big ones you cant miss those. so once you get the color code, read the colors, ex red, gree, brown, last line is either silver or gold, that will tell you the resitor value. then google resistor color codes and then you can match the color sequence with the value codes, and that will tell you the value you need in ohms but then you have to get the size 1/4 watt resistors are generally about 6 mm in legnth, im measuring the actual part of the resistor not including the metal leads, just the body, so if its larger its probally a 1/2 watt if smaller its an 1/8 watt, 1/8 watt are about 4 mm. now go buy the resistor, but you might find it that tough, if its a common value radio shack might have it, but resistors are so cheap, pennies for a handful, good luck on your search.

Magnavox MDL 51mp3964h distorted and waved picutre

Hello pkrocks

It looks like your convergence amplifiers have gone bad, this is a common problem. If your set uses the STK329-110 or STK329-xxx series of amplifier both of them will have to be replaced. There is a lot of information on fixya about how to do this yourself, but you have to be careful in removing and replacing the amplifiers and the associated bias resistors.

I hope this helps

Thank you,

Insignia NS-R5100 5.1ch receiver shuts down in a few seconds and Stand-by light starts flashing.

the output transistors are blown in one or more channels also the driver transistors are blown in the same channel.

you can find this problem real easy using a DVOM (digital volt ohm meter) on the continuity test(BEEP).

start be removing the amp section from the receiver and laying it on the table bench whatever no going from B-C and C-E if any beeb there junk and the driver transistors are also and there are a few resistors that are junk.

parts list

2@2sd2390 sanken get from newark and only newark/farnell
2@2sb1560 sanken get from newark and only newark/farnell
2@2sd947 from newark
4@ 2sc1841 or 2sc1845 to replace 2sc1845
4@ 2sa998 or 2sa992 to replace 2sa992
8@ .22 ohm 1/4 watt metal film resistor 1%
2@ 4.7 ohm 1/4 watt metal film resistor 1%

this is a parts list for 2 channels
only get the powertransistors (the sanken) from newark any others i have found as counterfeit and destroy stuff and dont work

i dont remember location #'s on the board but
