Need model # of set, but basicly it sounds like a driver ic for the panel blew up. You should be able to open the back and see a hole blown in one of the ic's. Probably near the side you saw smoke coming from. It needs to be replaced. On some models, they are epoxyed over and cannot be replaced. which means you need a new set. Or at least a new panel. But it is usually cheaper to purchase a new set with better warranty and newer features. Good luck. and let me know if i can help you further. Guru Jay... Have a great day.

Yes it certainly sounds like the panel driver IC blew out and depending on the manufacturer, you will need to have the entire panel replaced. It seems manufacturers would have learned their lesson by now with the panels and made separate drivers for them.

Hi have a samsung 42 inch plasma, all of a sudden it has a band 20cm wide of dotted lines going across the whole screen, some channels or when playstation in use the band gets wider, does not seem to...

if the band is horizontal your tv has bad y-buffer board. Usually there are 2 buffer boards- top and bottom. if the problem is in the top half of the screen replace the top board, otherwise replace bottom board.
but better to replace both a the same time.

if the tv has a vertical lines from top to bottom it may have bad plasma panel and can be considered as not economical to repair.

Panasonic TC-P42S2 .. Transparent 2 inch wide vertical discoloration on panasonic 42 inch plasma, very left of the screen.

Fixed mine, myself! Black 3 inch vertical band (stripe) appeared after a cros country move on our PC-T50G10. Occasionally we would see white band with multicolored pixel width stripes. Took the risk of taking off the back to see if I could see anything. Found places on sides and bottoms where plastic like 2" flat cables could be seen. Guesstimated where the band was and found that I could flip down a black cover on one end of the cable. Tried to pull it, gently. Mistake. Realized it wouldn't one out like computer hard drive cables, so I took out the screws holding the plate on the other end (it's only an inch long). That allowed me remove the cable. Took it out, cleared away dust, put t back and closed the black over. It worked! Put the screws back in, back on and... we are happy (although I do have four extra screws!). Just be gentle.

Red band at top of tv

Hi,if its a an LCD RPTV it sounds like a light engine problem.Basically your tv uses 3 LCD chips that create the image .Each chip is like a tiny screen that blend together to get the colors and picture right. They are green, red and blue. When they start to fail you will start to get color discoloration or that red band you are getting.May the Lord Jesus bless you!

42" Panasonic Plasma - Vertical red stripe 6" from left side

We originally had a red stripe roughly 3" wide running vertically on the ride edge area of our Panasonic 52" Viera plasma tv. It has now been joined by a solid black stripe of the same width running from the top to the bottom. Living in Germany and purchased at local PX long enough ago that the warranty is likely expired. Now what?

See if you can center the picture in the setup menu. It sounds like it's just off center.
