Question about Projection Televisions

Black box showing up while viewing DVDs

I have played DVDs on my Sony DAV-C990 for a couple of years now. Recently, I have been getting a blacked out area on the TV screen while the DVD is playing. It takes up approximately 1/3 of the lower portion of the screen. I have played around with virtually every menu feature but am unable to get the blacked out area to disappear. The blacked out area only appears when playing DVDs. The AV system is connected to a Sony HD projection TV. At times, the black box will disappear revealing the full screen for a split second that pop right back on. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have a Panasonic 51 inch projection TV, when you turn it on the picture is fine for a second then a big black box covers about 80% of the screen it is centered. My son fell into it, then this started, happens with DVD, VCR and SAT. Thanks, Sam

This sound like a problem with the Closed Caption, on many sets if the C.C. is set to text a black box apears, and since it only happens on DVD you might look at the DVD menu and see if it has this Text featcher in the Closed Caption menu and turn it off

Won't display tv and there is a black box during dvd play

It sounds like you have the closed-captioning set to "text" mode. When set this way, if captioning is present the set clears the area where the text goes. You don't see the box on channels or programs where captioning isn't being used. On most TV remotes a single button controls captions, so it's easy to get into text mode without knowing it.

I guess it's missing blue. Even if you see the blue crt working it's not enough and focalised. replace the coolant in it and also check if you have some coolant leak on the crt pcb.
