I have a gateway laptop and cannot log onto it at all. My username is the only one that shows up when I try Safe Mode and I can't find admin option like it says in another question/solution. Is there any way I can reset my password without sending it out to a repair shop or wiping the computer completely?

Restart your computer during the boot process tap the f8 button three times this will boot into safe mode where the only things working will be your mouse and keyboard enabling you to attempt to repair your computer Advanced Boot Options screen appears.

Select the Safe Mode option using the up and down arrow keys, then press the ENTER key. Choose "Windows XP Home/Professional", depending on the version of the operating system.

Press ENTER. Shortly, the welcome screen should show.
Log in as "Administrator". Click Yes to not use System Restore Mode.


Click the Start button. Choose Run and type in "control user passwords" (without the quotes). Click OK.


Select the "Administrator" user. Click Change my password. Enter a new password in the corresponding text boxes. Click OK. Write this password down and store it in a secure place Close the User Accounts window and restart Windows.

You didn't say what version of windows you use. With some versions you can bypass the password in the safe mode. When the computer starts press F8 until it starts to beep. This gives you the option of starting in safe mode. When you get to the screen where you should put in the password you get the option to log in as administrator with no password required. Log in, go to control panel, find your username and change or delete the password.

If you cannot get in this way there is a program available from http://www.windows-password-recovery.net/ which costs 36 euros or 49 dollars. When you pay for it you get the option to download an image file which you burn to a cd. You can then boot any windows computer with this cd and it gives you the option to delete the log on password without going into windows. You then remove the cd and restart windows with no password.

hi, you can try to log on safe mode on your pc use the administrator account and system restore it.

try leave the password blank.
you know? When we install Windows, it automatically creates an account “Administrator” and sets its password to blank. So try to logon as adminstrator ,here is the guide:
Start system and when you See Windows Welcome screen / Login screen, press ctrl+alt+del keys Twice and it’ll show Classic Login box. Now type “Administrator” (without quotes) in Username and leave Password field blank. Now press Enter and you should be able to log in Windows.
Now you can reset your account password from “Control Panel -> User Accounts”.
Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.

If your postive your password is right there is a very good chance you may have had a caps lock on or off depending on how you wanted your password when you set it in the begining. If all else fails try booting into the admin account via safe mode. Search online how to get your laptop to log to safe mode, usually you can select the option in msconfig by going to run and typing in msconfig or if you hold your power button in till it shuts off and turn it back on you will have an option for safe mode and log in as admin in the admin account (usually no default password is assigned) then you can back up your data and then do a reformat. THEN REMEMBER your password :-)

boot in to safe mode and copy all your data from mydoc to other location.
press F8 after you power on your laptop go to safe mode...

You will see advanced options menu
Select " Safe mode with net working"
Now your computer will give you an option to log in with the administrator username
You need to log in with Admin and then goto control panel and change the password for your username ...



If this does not work then plz reply back stating the Operating system you have like windows XP, vista , 98 , 2000 etc...
