If it's a sata connection on the drive you may not have any sata sockets on the motherboard. You will need something like an IDE to Sata adapter like this one: Adapter.
Windows XP doesn't nativey support SATA. Check in BIOS to see if your motherboard supports sata to IDE emulation.

Hi,
I'll be gladly to answer your question. Once you have inserted your DVD Rewriteable in your DVD-ROM. Please go to Start, then click My Computer. Now right click the DVD icon on the My Computer window. It will give you options and choose Format. Then the Format window will show up. Please put a tick mark on Quick Format and click Start. Once its done, right click the DVD icon and select Properties to check the capacity of the DVD Rewriteable.
I hope I answered your question.
Thanks a lot!
First, be sure you have your genuine copy of Windows XP
-if not, you can contact Dell and ask them a copy of it
1)insert the XP disc on the drive then turn off the computer
2)Turn on again the computer and once you press the power button, keep on tapping on F12
3)You should be seeing the Boot Options. Select CD/DVD and keep on tapping on ENTER once you see the message: "press any key to boot from CD/DVD"
4)if you have done it succesfully, you should see a loading bar that says, Setup is loading files.
5)wait for it to load and Just follow the steps on this link:

You should be able to get sound thru the IDE cable (this is the same type of cable also referred to as a ribbon cable, your hard drive connects in the same way) that is connecting your drive to the motherboard. turn the pc off and unplug power and reseat this cable on both ends be careful as the pins are fragile and will break
if this doesn't fix your problem let me know and we will try anotherr solution
well, you can try taking the dvd burner out first and exchange places with the other burner. what i mean is may the dvd burner your primary master or slave. try it and post whats happens.
I recommend, you take out the hard drive, put in the other IDE port, presumming is IDE drive, and let the DVD cd rewritable on Cable Select.
Another try, is Start Up on Save mode, and uninstall the drivers for your particular CD/DVD device, and restart your PC, then the system Should install them automatically, or you can do it manually. this should fix your problem.
Good Luck! (presuming you use Windows Xp)
