I was trying to secure my network and locked myself out...when I try to connect to my own linksys, it asks me for the password and I did not write down the key codes. How can I reset it or disable it so that I can get back on my wireless. Currently, I'm using lan and cannot access the IP address 192.168.1.1. Please help!!! Robbie

There are two versions of that router. One of them has a button on the front which will put the router into a known state, and reset everything. Both versions have a small hole on the back of the router (near the power plug, I believe) with a button inside. Use a paperclip to hold that button down for 5 to 10 seconds, then reset the power to the router, and it should be back to it's defaults.

Want to put lock on guest

Linksys E series routers can broadcast 2 wireless networks. First one is the main wireless network which is secured wireless network.
The second network is a guest network which will always show you unsecured.
It will never show you secured and you can not make it secured.
However it has a web based security.
Anyone can connect to the guest network but will not be able to access Internet without Guest access password.
In other words there is a security.
You can disable guest access also.

I think you should upgrade the firmware on your router.
After upgrading the firmware reset the router and reconfigure it manually.
I will also suggest you to create a new wireless network and use security modem WPA.
Try to connect to the new wireless network and see if that works.

I want to password protect my router

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. If you want to make you connection secure the you need to set a Network Key on your router and need to access the Wireless Settings Page.

To access the router page just open a browser then type 192.168.1.1, the Default username is blank and the password is admin. Go to the Wireless Tab select Wireless Security You can select either WEP, WPA or WPA2 to make it secure and under the Security Mode you will see there Network Key. The Network Key serves as a password or security code on your network to make it secure. Generate a personalize key for your network.

If this works dont forget to say thanks. Thanks for using Fixya.

I had unsecured wireless router, today i tried to make it secure and locked myself out

to factory default your router push the "reset" button on the back for about 10 seconds then release. once the router has rebooted it will be back at factory defaults.

The default ip address is 192.168.1.1

you can leave the user name field blank and the default password is admin.

I am trying to set up security on my Linksys router WRT150N?

Below are some pointers to secure your linksys router:

- Change the default password of the router. By default it is admin. Changing the default password will prevent unwanted users from accessing the setup page of your router. Click here for the steps.

- Change the default SSID or network name. This will allow you to identify your wireless network. Click here for the steps.

- Disable SSID broadcast. This will prevent other users from detecting your wireless network. Click here for the steps. Take note: You will need to manually enter the SSID on your wireless adapter to connect.

- Enabling wireless security on your router. This will require a security key before you can connect to the wireless network. Click here for the steps.

For additional security to your wireless networks, you may refer to this link.

Hope this helps! Happy Holidays!
