Tom,
What you are describing sound like a typical problem of having several little software called spy-ware, installed in your computer working to gain access to internet and consequently slowing down your entire system.

Please go to the following link, download and install the free adaware; after the installation launch the program and it will remove tons of this annoying and malicious software.

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5&cdlpid=10045910

After you did this step let see if you notice some iprovement, more actions may be required.

Try downloading ad-aware. Run it and see if that speeds it up. It is a spyware killer (pop-ups), also clean your hard drive up with a disk clean up option and a degragmentation. If it is still running slow, try a ram up grade.

Too much heat

Does the fan run on this machine ? They eventually fail but can be replaced. Has it been removed before? If so make sure there is fresh thermal paste where required. There is a disassembly guide online for this machine but the site is in Mandarin. That is never a problem for us Chrome users but I don't know about other browsers.

To much heat

If the processor is overheating, check the fan to make sure it is turning freely but does not have sloppy bearings. Make sure the fins are clean. If these are OK, replace the thermal transfer compound between the processor and the heat sink. If the compound is too thick or is dried up and hardened, it will not transfer heat efficiently. I get the best results with a thin layer of silver-based compound - just barely enough to cover the chip evenly. Be sure to clean both the heat sink and processor thoroughly before applying the new compound. Use isopropyl alcohol for cleaning if necessary.

Try running Spybot (http://www.spybot.de) and avg on it. run Spybot several times (rebooting after every attempt) untill it finds nothing. If you built the machine are you sure that the processor heat sink is correctly installed and not over heating? What is the speed of the drive?

Beatriceccc: This can frequently happen when Vista runs on a computer that's hardware just can't keep up with it. I'd like to have you try this for me. Click on your start menu, then "Right click" on "computer" in the left column. This will take you to a page, that will give you something called the Microsoft Rating. If you can comment back to this post with the details of the overall rating, as well as the specific categories, we'll be able to provide better assistance.
Was this computer pre-installed with vista? or did you upgrade from XP? What is the model number of your machine? All of this will help us to help you.

Upgrading my laptop processor

When you're running an average load, start Task Manager and view the performance tab. If the amount of free RAM is low, then definately upgrade your RAM. Plus, nowadays it's really cheap to upgrade ram.
As far as upgrading your processor, that can get a little tricky and expensive.
Also, what do you mainly use your computer for, and what operating system do you use?

Id your motherboard also has onboard video, and you have a graphics card, make sure that you try both connections. Chances are if you are using a graphics card and your computer thinks your using onboard, then you will get the no signal or vise versa.
