Question about Televison & Video
I recently went to buy a 32 inch hdtv. I do not have cable or satillite so I use the air waves. When I turned any of them ( various mfgs ) to an airwave station and turned on closed captions, every one appeared in the middle of the screen. My daughter is hard of hearing and I need this to work. Any brands or models without this problem? Thanks
I have a Sharp Aquos 46" and go a Comcast HD receiver as well, and had the same problem turning off the Closed Captioning. I order to turn it off you need to go into the box user setting by (starting w/ the cable box and tv on) pressing the power button for the cable box then the menu button for the cable box. This will open up the user settings menu. Just toggle CLOSED CAPTION to DISABLED.

ok had to post this one with reference to the above problems
My area St Augustine Fl. .. COMCAST (THOSE PAIN IN THE A--) SERVICE INSTALLED A NEW BOX IN MY HOME THE OTHER DAY ... I KEEP SEEING the box go thru dowmloads
then the very next day I started to see the colosed caption across my screen
SOLUTION ... with tv on and box on ( be in cable mode) press MENU on cable remote ,press power button, press menu again, look at screen and where it says caption make sure it is disabled
Mine was enabled ... change it and problem fixed ... I spoke to comcast finally after trying all day and they confirmed that with their new down loads to box it triggered the CAPTION to be ON
anyway problem was fixed ...
I read all prevoius posts and tried them all ... so may be this will work for problem that someone is having as of 10-9-2008 ( I could not believe that they could do that but they sure can COMCAST is just a PAIN in the A--
thanks to all who post solutions and I had to do my share and maybe be able to help someone else.

The problem was with the Motorfolla Comcast cable box not my T.V. . I turned off my Comcast cable box, pressed menu on the remote to the cable box. This made a 16:9 ratio appear on the cable box's LED read out, and a bluish screen appear on my television. One of the options on my television was to turn on and off closed captioning. Therfore, I turned off closed captioning and the problem was solved.

If you are using a HD cable box then this would be setup in the cable box itself.
With a Motorola Cable box, you would turn it off and press the menu button (with the receiver off and TV on). This will bring up a menu that will allow you to adjust your digital closed caption settings.
If you do not have a Motorola cable box that I would refer to the manual or call the cable company.
