Blue Blob on big sceen is growing

I have a three year old 50 inch projection TV with a Blue Blob at the top that appeared about one month ago is is continuing to grow. While the TV was under warranty we did have the bulb and motherboard replaced as well as have a techniccian come out and fix the red screen issue. I would prefer to try and fix this myself as repair costs seem high. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance...

Is this something I can replace myself?

  • kpmoore1 Feb 13, 2008

I has a small "bloom" at the top center of my 54", approx. 5" x 5". Then my bulb blew and I replaced it myself. Since then, the bloom is now about 12" x 12", covering most of the center of the screen. I do live in Cincinnati.

You have a defective light engine and you do not need to buy a the part at all...refurbished or new. Hitahci will replace it at their cost. Here is what you need to do...just went through this. Call Hitachi's customer relations department at 800-654-7013 and tell them that you have a defective light engine. They will act like they've not heard of this but they have. They will give you the names of some certified dealers in your area. Once the tech comes to your home and confirms that it's a bad light engine, call Hitachi back and they will send a new light engine to the dealer. The dealer will call you to set up a day/time to come out and intstall.

Here's the deal, Hitachi will cover this expensive part (cost $1500) but it you're not under warranty, you will have to pay for the install. Our install was $400 but others on this site have paid around $200. Please do not let anyone tell you that you have to pay for this part. Deal directly with Hitachi. They have not recalled this part but they are replacing it for free..brand new and not refurbished. All you pay is the install. Also, deal only with customer relations and not customer service. The 800 # I listed is directly to Hitachi customer relations department. Good Luck!

Sounds like the CRT tubes are going out which is fairly common on Sony. Inside the back of the TV there are 6 knobs - 2 for each is for focus - dont touch - the other for brightness...turn down the brightness just a hair untill the lines go away.

3LCD Projection TV 2.5 years old displaying blue hue/blobs

I would first try a new lamp. If the reflector portion of the lamp has any defects, it could show up this way as the light would not be uniform. The next possibility is a defective light engine. The engine portion if not field repairable and would need to be replaced. Try the lamp first and let us know what happens.
