If your hardisk is crashed then your computer cannot detect it so its good to replace it if its under warranty

External drive crashed

Formatting the drive, depending upon the type of format, is destructive of data. There are specialized recovery programs that can sometimes save the old FAT tables, but chances are you are out of luck. Many times these external drives fail because they are not built to handle the heat and shock/vibration that comes with being encased and mobile. Often it is not the drive itself that fails, rather the SATA/USB controller in the enclosure. I have seen many individuals pull their "failed" drives out of the enclosure, install it internally, and find all the data is still there.

My computer drive crashed. How can I retrieve the data?

If the operating system program was all that crashed, then yes, you may be able to recover data. If the hard drive itself failed totally, then your only possible option is to take it to a data recovery specialist. They can often recover data off these devices as they have special tools and software to do it. They are expensive, though, so unless the data you are looking to recover is very important to you, it;s probably not worth the cost. Now if the hard rive itself still runs, but just won't run Windows, you can remove the hard drive and connect to to another PC as an add-on drive and access the files that way.

when you first turn on the system, you need to press a key to enter the bios (usually f2, delete, tab, escape...but can be others...it usually says on the screen something like "press f2 for setup"). There should be an option in here to reset default settings (may be called restore defaults, load defaults, or something similar). Load defaults, save and exit and see if it boots up. If not, you need to go into bios and see if it's detecting a hard drive, if the drive is seen, diagnostics should be run on the drive to determine if it has failed. If the drive is not seen, it should be removed from the system and replaced (unplugged and replugged), then see if it is seen by the system. If the drive cannot be detected by the system, you could have an issue with the motherboard or the hard drive. Test a known good hard drive, if it is still not detected, you have a motherboard issue.

Hard drive on an eMachine computer desktop has crashed. Computer won't boot. Is there anyway to get files off the crashed hard drive?

take the hard drive to a local computer guru... recovery will depend on what caused the crash, and what has happened since then. Basically, he or she will need to try to boot your hard drive with another tower, or pull all the info directly from the disks themselves. If you had to ask this question, you're gonna need help to fix it.... Sorry.

Connect the external drive to a different computer, and "browse" the contents of the drive -- if the disk can be read, then the files can be copied, and maybe burned to "blank" writable CD/DVD disks.
