Nifty little IDE to laptop ide adapters on ebay for under $10 delivered..
remove laptop HD.. use adapter, plug into desktop as second drive.
Load up XP install to a folder.. use a decent file copier so you get hidden files. try filesync 2.xx (look for it),
Back into the laptop, try it..

Only other thing would be LEGACY USB SUPPORT in the bios and an external usb drive... Hopefully your usb problem is XP related and not hardware related..

Hi there. I have an Acer Aspire 5600AWLMi, I want to format my laptop and start everything from scratch; reinstalling XP and all the drivers in it. Two problems: 1.Don't have the Acer Recovery...

You need to replace the DVD reader or use an external one, and obtain a windows install CD. Enter your model number on the acer website to get all of the required drivers. Obtain the drivers and put them on a CD before reformatting as you will not have the wifi drive to go get the drivers if you try and get the drivers after you format.

Acer aspire 3690, my cd-rom will play movies, audio and some old games can be read but mostly refuses to read most of my game disks now, any ideas??

Try an external DVD drive that you can connect to your USB port. The drive you have in the laptop either has a dirty laser lens, which you can carefully clean with a "Q" and alcohol, or the laser itself may be going out. The drive can be replaced. You mentioned you have a cd-rom. If you can play movies (DVD) it is more likely a DVD drive instead of a cd-rom. CD-ROMs can only read data or music.

My acers aspire 3690 laptop boots up to windows xp home perfectly but the usb ports do not work,it shows that it is working but when i plug in a usb device it does not try to reconigse it, i cannot find...

The partition D is actually a back up partition that has factory image for the original Operating system that was installed in the computer.
factory recovery ( DATA LOSS )
if the computer is booting to windows, then click start and open a folder named as 'acer' listed in ' all programs '.You will find the ' Acer e-recovery managent ' in that folder. You can open it and click allow for the user account controls. Please click 'restore ' for the next screen and the select the first option, 'completely restore to factory defaults '.Follow the on screen instruction to initiate the Recovery.
The Alternate method for starting the Recovery on startup is using the combination of ALT+F10 ( some models its ALTgr ) on startup.Press and Hold down the ALT( Left hand of space ) and at the same time keep on tapping the F10 key till you get the message " Windows is loading files".Just follow the On screen Instructions to start the Recovery.

I have a ace 3690. I had to wipe ou the hard drive and the alt+f10 function will not work. I bought a copy of windows xp media center and when it gets to 94% it comes up with cant find all the dll files....

You need the Acer restore CD. If you don't have it call Acer and they can supply you with one. Costs about $20. It's probably looking for a specific driver file. If you didn't reformat the hard drive then it's looking at the current configuration to load device drivers. You will need to reformat the drive before reinstalling windows. if you need data from the hard drive you can pull it out and get an external case for it and access it through another PC that way.

I have a aspire 5515 acer with Vista Basic and i want to install Xp Pro. When i try to install Xp pro it starts and the comes back that it is quiting the installion because it will damage something. How do...

There's no single way to install Windows XP. As there is no CD / DVD drive, you have two main choices:

1. Purchase an external CD / DVD drive. Plug it into a USB port on the Aspire, and then access the BIOS, Make sure the CD drive is first, and insert your Windows XP disc. You should now be able to install it normally.

2. Use a bootable Flash drive. This method will be far more difficult, and requires a moderate amount of experience with computers. First you will need to install QEMU on another computer. Create a hard drive the same size or smaller than the one in the Acer. Install Windows XP to it using QEMU. Copy the hard drive image onto a USB Flash drive. Now install some version of Linux on it, such as Puppy Linux or Damn Small Linux. Howtos are available in the Related Links section below. Boot from the Flash drive, and access a command line. Find your hard drive in the /dev folder (probably sda or hda). Now issue the following command

dd if=image.img of=/dev/hda

This will make an exact copy of the hard drive image to the hard drive in the Acer. Waituntil the command is completely done. Now turn off the computer and unplug the flash drive. When you power it back on, it should boot into Windows.
