Don't mistake hissing sound with a possible high pitched squeal. You probably have a shorted horizontal output transistor. Take it to a service center to be looked at by a professional.

are your speakers too close or your mobile phone sitting on top of tv?
try turning it off at the switch on the tv, does that clear it
may need de-gausing, have it checked at an approved tv dealer.

Hissing sound from a Panasonic old TV...Sound and picture are OK. The hissing sound even continues when the MUTE on the Box is ON. The hissing only stops when the MUTE on the TV is ON. I am using the...

If you disconnect or power off the converter box does the hiss go away?
If you connect a VCR or DVD player does it still have the hiss? We
need to isolate what source is causing the hiss if it is from the set or
if it is from the converter box.
When you turn the volume control down on the set, does the hiss
reduce in level? If mute stops it, it should reduce in level as you
turn the volume down. Then turn up the sound level control on
the converter box whether its a manual control or by remote. If you
can get a combination that minimizes the hiss and gets higher sound
level from the programming that may cure it.
I am not familiar with the converter box you are using. Are you using
Audio/Video cables from it to the set or is it coming out with coaxial cable
and used on a channel? If you are using a very old set with a tuner input
perhaps the fine tuning is out of adjustment.

Zaburi,
It's probably micro or tac switch related but that chassis has to be one of the worst pieces ever built... Good news is you can buy a new one for very little cost and some wholesalers were selling the complete chassis for under $75.00 dollars.

Yet another hissing/buzzing noise from back of TV

Good day.

Check for the horizontal output transistor, flyback and filter capacitors.
Any of these being shorted can cause the problem.

your tv is not properly tuned or reset it once & then see some improvement or your input signal is weak or loose connection near input.

What could be wrong?

These old technology sets (rear projectors) are notorious for high voltage problems, and this is probably what you have. RCA is now, sadly, a Chinese junk brand with poor support, but your older unit may still be slightly viable, but not very. Put it into a big truck and take it to a shop. Home service may not be available, or may be nearly worthless. Better yet, get a new TV. I suggest a 1920X1080 LCD model. (Panasonic, Sharp, Sanyo, even Funai or Orion are the best choices) Forget plasma, DLP, or any of the rear projectors. These huge, ugly (and mostly empty) boxes really belong in the Smithsonian, not in your home! When you see the new LCD's, you will forget about your old boat anchor in a heartbeat.
