Missing part I have a Manfrotto tripod #290 Bogen #3431. At the top of the tripod just under the head is a female threaded hole almost directly across from the lockdown nut for the extension tube. What is its purpose? What is missing? Thanks, Dave

How do I connect a Manfrotto - 026 Swivel Umbrella Adapter (Lite-Tite) to a tripod?

Deborah
If you bought the Manfrotto #026 Lite-Tite new, it should have come with (2) brass adapters..., ((1) with male 1/4-20 & 3/8-16" threads & (1) with female 1/4-20" & 3/8-16" threads). All universal photo tripods made in the last 30 years use these (2) thread sizes. All you should need to mount this unit to a tripod is the 'female' adapter spud. If you are missing this item..., it is a Manfrotto #119 adapter (available through most photo dealers).

Removing Tripod head from center post on Manfrotto Modo 785B

I have the national geographic branded version. Here is how you remove the head.

(1) remove the center post from the tripod
(2) lock the ball head with the trigger lock
(3) grasp the body of the ball head with one hand and the center column with the other.
(4) turn counter clockwise.

If you're intending to replace the ballhead, be warned that the thread is non-standard. I have a new "plug" with a standard 1/4" thread made for free by the machinist at my job. I don't know how you would go about adapting it without such a capability.
