Question about Cameras

1 Answer

Pentax optio s4i , battery is fully charged but when you turn the camera on it turns itself off straight away ,its almost as if the lens is jammed because it hasn't retracted itself into the camera properly

Hi this is a common problem its usually down to a bit of dirt stuck in the lense itself

What you can do is when you switch the camera on try and catch the lense and gently pull it out a little bit this should free anything that is jammed but you need to pull it out a bit for the dirt to come un jammed

If the lense hasnt gone into the camera properly then this usually means that a bit of grit has gone down the side of the lense and is stopping it retracting properly this will give the problem your having if you can grab the lense and pull it at the same time as switching on you should find that it will come out properly then retract again switching camera off but then when you switch it on it should work as normal let me know if you can do this if not you can try another way but let me know first.
You might need to hold it tight and pull it but not to hard just get the lense further out than it is now then you should find it will work as normal

Let me know once you have tried this try a few times as you need to pull the lense when it should be coming out not going in if your camera has got a button that slide across one way for taking pictures and one way for viewing if this is a slide switch make sure its slides on for taking pictures also if it does have a slide switch put it onto view pictures and see if the camera comes on to view the pictures

Hi this is also worth trying but you need to be carefull doing this remove the memory card if it has one and remove the battery then find a bit of rubber or a couple of elastic bands three or four will do.
As you look at camera from the back put the rubber bands around the camera running from left to right ie either side.
then tip the camera so that the rubber bands are now running from top to bottom now find somewhere hard like table or something similar then not to hard i mean not hard enough to break the camera then bang it on the part where the rubber bands are doing this will protect the camera from the shock of banging it the rubber bands will cushion the camera and doing this will cause no dammage but then bang the camera on the table a couple of times then put the battery back in and give it a try this usually frees anything that is jamming the lense.
If it still dont work then try couple more times it wont damage the camera plus you cant damage it anymore than it is anyway as you cant get them repaire it just costs to much and camera shops dont repair them and their are no servicable parts anyway.
So try banging it a couple of times if this still dont fixit then try pulling the lense like i said earlier also try turning the lense slightly as some lenses turn when they move in and out.
Failing this the problem that causes the lense damage is if someone has used the camera and put pressure on the lense whilst its out and in use.
I mean say someone used it then put the camera down with the lense out and this could damage the lense motor these cant be repaired and cant be replaced let me know how you get on ok

the only other option is to gently bang the camera or shock it by banging it into your hand if knowbody has stresses the lense motor then it should just be jammed with usually a bit of grit try hitting it into the palm of your hand.
Also cant you hold the lens enough to turn it slighly or not, usually turning it slightly will allow it to open.
Is the lense deffinately slightly out.
Do you plug the camera into your pc using cable or do you use a card reader if you plug it into computer using cable try and see if this allows you to turn camera on

How do I solve my A90 prob?

I just fixed a friends Pentax Optio S4i.
You want to extract this file.
File name : O4IE101W.EXE
Format your SD card in my computer. Open the O4IE101W.EXE on your desktop. It makes the file fwdc124p.bin. Put the fwdc124p.bin on the SD card.
I did save this file on the flash card.

Then I fully charged the battery (I got this from the Pentax site)
I opened the "secret menu" by pressing the MENU-FLASH and the POWER button at the same time.
Once menu opened, I pressed the FOCUS twice then (FLOWER, MOUNTAIN, MF) symbol twice after this two toggles to the right with the OK button.
Then press the MENU button once again.
So the menu screen open now.
Down toggle of the OK button, go to ROM UPDATE then go down to "SYSTEM INITIAL" and press OK. Press another OK to re-initialize your camera.
Once this has been done, turn your camera off.

Turn camera on again opening your camera with the MENU+Power ON procedure...finally this should be posting "Complete" after the "Loading"
When it shows Complete, turn camera off.

You are finished and your camera should be ready to work again.

At least this is how I fixed my friends A90 error message.

Turns on beeps lens comes out tries to focus

HI, this will occur when there ia a lens mechanism failuer. Inside the cam housing , there is a mechanism that is powered by a small servo motor. this mech can become lose or unstable, in return, jamming itself open or closed. When this happens, you will need to send it to the manufacture for this repair. they will replace the motor and mechanism as well. Contact Pentex for a repair ticket. they will refer you to a nearby repair depot.

Pentax Optio M20

But it does seem to be a lens problem. Possibly the lens is out of sync as mentioned in another post here.If there is a grinding, the lens is probably damaged by dirt or sand.
Make sure the batteries or battery is fully charged.

Optio S4i will not turn on?

Your problem is part of the dreaded A90 error code these cameras get. My camera had this last year and updated firmware cured it till this month when my wife let the battery go dead and the problem returned, but firmware update won't fix it this time around.Go to Pentax site and download new firmware for camera. Follow instructions that come from Pentax on the download to install software. Its pretty easy. These are cheap cameras as far as Pentax is concerned. They only work for about 2 years, based on other users and my experience. Good luck
