I put new memory chips in my PC and the computer will not start up. It sounds like it is, then there is a beep and the screen remains blank. I tried putting in the old memory cards and nothing happens. What do I do?

  • Anonymous Jan 20, 2010

I followed the proper procedures. However, there are 4 slots to seat the memory cards in and I dont recall which ones the original memory chips were in. i am assuming they were not the ones with the black lock down tabs and I will try the power up you suggested.

When you went to install those ram memory modules. Was the computer unplugged from power? Did you TOUCH the metal frame of the open computer case, BEFORE you reached inside your computer, AND BEFORE you took those new ram memory modules, out of their protective anti-Static bags? Are you certain the old ram memory modules are fully seated? Gold plated contact pins are all the way down in the ram slot, locks on the sides are snapped in place, the ram module's locating Notch, is lined up with the Locating Lug in the bottom of the ram slot. (Hey, I have seen people do it! Cram the ram module backwards in the ram slot. Ram module isn't even sitting all the way down, and the locks are open!) Computer off, and unplugged from power. Press the Power On button in, and hold it in. Hold it in for a count of FIVE seconds. Let go of the Power On button. Do this procedure Two more times. (Total of Three times) What you are doing is clearing CMOS Error Codes, and resetting BIOS Setup back to the factory default settings. Now plug the computer into power. WAIT 1 minute. Turn the computer on.

Put one stick of ram memory, in the ram memory slot that is closest to the Processor.
Put the other ram memory stick in the slot that has the same color.

The ram memory slot that is closest to the Processor, is Slot 1.
Next to the ram memory slot on the motherboard, it may have DIMM 1 printed.

A Processor always reads Slot 1 first.

3 Short beep and 1 long beep and blank screen. My

That means there is s problem with the RAM on the motherboard (Problem lies with the Memory Chip). This could be a result of a Memory chip that has not been inserted properly or it has moved away from its contacts on the motherboard. This will be fixed by opening up the RAM compartment and remove the memory chips and replace them back carefully. Try to switch on your laptop again. Make sure that when you are doing all this, the computer is off and the charger is not connected to it. This I hope will solve your problem.

Blank screen and continuous beeps when computor starts up

Count the beeps, they tell the technician what is going on. Normally that is a pattern to the beeps such as (3 long beeps, 1 long beep followed by two short beeps).

Does the laptop post anything on the screen when you hit the power button or does it immediately start beeping?

Just off the top of my head I would think you've got a memory issue. It could be a Video Card issue too.

What brand and model is your laptop?

Lets, try the memory tests just in case:

Remove the Power Cord, Open the Case and remove one of thememory chips. Set the chip aside then try rebooting the computer. If it boots, then you know the memory chip you set aside is bad so mark an x onit with an ink pen. If it fails to boot then move the chip to the nextmemory slot and try rebooting. If it fails take the chip out and set itaside, then put the other chip in and try booting it in both slots. If itboots, just to verify that the chip set aside is bad, mark an x on it and putit into the open memory chip slot and try booting.

My pc just beeps every 2 to 3 sec no vedio

Either your video card is bad or you might have some bad memory. Does the video ever post anything on the screen when you press the power button to start the computer?

It really sounds like a memory problem.

Dear all we have a compaq dc7700 which does not start anymore. It gives blank screen, lfront led is red flashing and beeps 5 times. Can you tell me what is going on with this system ? Best regards

5 beeps for an AMI BIOS, which I think you have, means you have a processor error, or, in other words, the CPU.
Just to be sure, disconnect everything BUT the video, CPU, and memory. See if the result is the same.

I have upgraded my tc1100 to 1.5Gs of memory. The description on the memory module is ( Super * Talent D400SBG/H STT DDR-400 PC3200 SO-DIMM Hynix 1G/64X8). The problem is the computer initially boots into...

It sounds like that memory should be compatible with your tablet PC. It may be a bad memory stick -- try to replace it with a different memory stick (preferably from a different manufacturer) and see if it still gives you the same problem.
If you didn't have this problem before you installed the new memory, a different memory stick will likely correct the issue. You can also try removing the new memory and see if the PC boots up like it should.

Computer wont start.

I don't have access to your board details. However, beeps frequently represent memory problems. Try
removing the memory on your system and then putting it back.

You can access your memory on the bottom of your computer. It is likely the smallest rectangular hatch. After powering donwn the computer, remove one or two screws.

Remove the memory sticks by spreading the clips on each side of the memory. After removing them, put them back. This will clean the terminals and ensure a good connection. Before putting the back on, try to boot the computer. If you hear no beeps, all is good. Turn off the computer and put the hatch back on.

If you hear beeps, switch the memory modules. Try again. If you still hear beeps, try one module at a time in the primary memory slot. If one of these works, you should be able to buy a new memory module. Go to a sight like Crucial's and have it tell you what you can add. Perhaps this is a good excuse to upgrade.

You should do this at the kitchen table to avoid any static discharge.

HP dv6000 Laptop screen only starts up 1/4th of the time

The first issue you had with one long beeps and two short beeps is a memory module error. see the following HP website:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01732674&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=1842155 I would replace the memory chips and try again. If you have more than one chip try booting with one at a time to discover that one of them may be bad.

Blank screen upon startup

Try taking out the hard disk, plug in power and see if you have a display on your screen or external monitor. if same thing happen, try taking out the memory card. If you hear a beep sound it's a faulty mem. card, if no beep sound appears I suspected it's a motherboard faulty.

Dead pc

try to remove all external device connected to your computer. just leave the keyboad, mouse and monitor connected.
restart computer.
if still a blank screen
remove everything connected to your computer (mouse kyeboard and monitor) restart if nothing happens
open your computer and remove all devices (hard drive, optical drives, memory... restart,,, you should be hearing beeping sounds indicating motherboard is looking for memory. try putting back 1 memory at a time and checking all mem slot. to identify if one of the memory could be causing the blank screen. if both memory will not work try to use known good working memory. if you dont get to hear the beeping sound using a known good working memory. your memory is the problem.
