Question about Sony Handycam CCD-TRV208E Camcorder

1 Answer

Capture Operation. I am able to obtain perfect playback operation, both in the view-finder (black and white), and also on the side LCD panel (colour) All other controls are working satisfactorily and the battery is holding a good charge. Problem :- I am not getting any capture - the screen remains blank/black apart from a message asking me to set-up the time and date. After this instruction the screen remains black although, when I try and record I get the standby/record indicator, together with counter information, indicating that it should be recording. In the capture mode, it also erases any other information stored on the tape, and replaces the record time with a blank section. I have tried resetting the 'night shot' switch but apart from it telling me that this facility is working, I still get a black screen when I default to normal camera exposure. Any ideas,??? I was an electronices engineer by trade, and was wondering if I have lost an integrated circuit component or perhaps there maybe a mechanical problem regarding the lens system. If I have to dismantle the camcorder I would appreciate some advice - perhaps it would not be worth the expense in trying to repair this condition. Many thanks in anticipation. Adrian.

I will get the appropriate sized cleaning tape and give it a try.

I will let you know if this works.

    Many thanks for this suggestion.

The CCD image sensor of the camera has failed. It is the component responsible for capturing the image the camera is focussed on, display it on the screen and capture it. If its malfunctioning you are bound to see problems like these. Getting the imagesensor replaced should resolve the problem

The image in the viewfinder is now black and white and the LCD screen doesn't work

iam very sorry that you have this problem. When an LCD screen of DSRPD170P stops working it means that you have to get a replacement LCD screen. The replacement requires a qualified technical person. if you have such a person , then here are the details for ordering the LCD screen parts:
A-7078-956-A PD-217 board complete.
8-753-209-13 ACX500ENA
1-517-931-21 Tube fluorescent cold cathode.

Please note that the viewfinder of the DSR PD170 camera is always manufactured and supplied as black and white (not colour) so this is not a fault!

You should go into the menu, camera settings and set the evf to on. EVF stands for electronic view finder. This can be set to be on when the lcd is open or closed. CAreful, if the evf is set to on and you point the viewfinder towards the sun, it will burn white marks into the viewfinder and ruin it.

Sound but no picture.

if you are able to playback previously recorded cassette and the picture is perfect then its not the head. then the problem is with the image grabbing section i.e. the CCD. May be its damaged and needs replacement.

Powershot S1 IS trouble shooting in images of lcd monitor

Try playing back pictures you know were captured properly ( either with another properly working camera or with your camera before the problem with quality has appeared ). If the image is ok in playback but 'noisy' in capture mode then the CCD sensor is faulty /on its way out. Ask Canon if they repair CCD faults on this model free of charge.
