I'VE RECENTLY BOUGHT THIS DRIVE BUT IT DOESN'T READ ANY DVDs, COMMERCIAL OR RECORDED. IS THERE ANY SOFTWARE THAT MUST BE INSTALLED FIRST?
THANKS IN ADVANCE.
CARLOS [email protected]
I've installed the Nero 8 and still the drive doesn't read any DVDs. I guess the solution could be appropriate for the drive indicated by "chie-chie" (16X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer OEM Black with NTI Recording Software (DWQ28ABK) DVD Drive) but not for my drive SONY DVD RW AWQ170A.
Yes you can use nero 7 or cyberlink power dvd this software allow you to watch dvd movies. window media player doesnt play dvd without this softwares..

Buy a DVD cleaning kit follow the instructions, sometimes brings it back to life. If no change! the assembly will need to be replaced,"not cost effective" cheaper to replace.
CD-RW drives can only read all CD-rom and CD-RW formats and read DVD formats but cannot write to a DVD, if you want to write a DVDs you need to buy a DVD-RW burner which can burn all CD-formats
yes your quite correct, starforce once installed can damage the fimware more so for multi writers, a common problem will be slower recording speeds.
It can even damage the hardware itself and render the writer totally useless.
If your getting to that stage, for the price of a new writer, it's not worth the worry, replacing the drive is the only answer.
It says that it's a CD-RW drive- a CD-RW drive can't read/write DVD's, you need a DVD drive.
You can pick one up for rather cheap from several online retailers -
www.newegg.com
www.tigerdirect.com
etc.
It's common problem with combo drives in notebooks, they don't seem to last long.
Try this:-
Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete.
Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers.
If the problem persists the laser is faulty in the drive and the drive will need to be replaced.
Try this download page to update your firmware from 25/10/05, so if you bought your writer before this date maybe this will work, otherwise buy 8x discs.

The faster the discs are burned the more chance of errors there are, you should write at slower speeds for better quality.
