Have sound no picture fan makes noise then stops

If lamp, color wheel (if used), or a number of other things are wrong set will do just as you describe.

remove lamp and inspect to see if shattered inside.

with lamp removed look where it faces (may need a mirror) to see if the wheel is there and or shattered or broken.

first two things to look at. Lamps in general have a 2,000 hour life=average user that is 2 years.

Have sound but no video, also makes a high to low pitch noise, light blinks on start and stop switch. Sometimes it will come on if I wait an hour or so.I have changed the lamp. Could this be the color wheel...

Yes sir the problem is the color wheel try to replace it. Remove the lower access panel from the back of the set. To the left of the lamp housing, you see the color wheel. Unplug the two leads and, using the Torx screwdriver, carefully remove the three screws that hold the wheel to the lamp housing. Good day and best regards.

hi,
you have to che check three thing in your tv
1. lamp
2. lamp cooling fan
3. color wheel
you have mentioned that there is a loud sound can caused by the lamp cooling fan or by the color wheel. when the bearing of any one get damaged it will create aloud noise.
check the color wheel first. also check the lamp is it broken or not. if you need any more assistance feel free to contact me through fixya

Test

Ballast Lamp provide back light in DLP TV and if its bad / broken TV wont power up. If lamp is weak, dark or less bright picture will come in screen. Color wheel is responsible for colors in picture and if its broke, TV wont power up and common problem with color wheel is high pitch noise while it spins.

Lamp won't come on and loud rattle in back of tv

Probably a defective color wheel. The bearings are bad or perhaps the wheel itself is broken.

Samsung HLN617W 61 i

it is not related to the failure of the fan or color wheel by anything other then the age of the set..the lamp has a normal life of 4000 to 6000 hours and since your set is around 3.5 years old it probably has that amount of time on it..the lamp is consumer replaceable and many places sell them..the lamp number should be on a small sticker on the side of the set
