Steering gear on my Husqvarna YTH2148 tractor is stripped out. I am trying to figure out how to get it off. I have already removed the battery box, but cannot see any way to remove the old one. HELP

This fender shifted unit may need to be adjusted via shifter linkage. The linkage may not be finding neutral when the lever is in neutral. Try to move the lever easily into forward or reverse to see if the transmission can find neutral. If you can, then the linkage will need to be adjusted to compensate.
This machine has a fairly simple chain drive to the wheel axle shaft, there is a sprocket on the shaft itself, this may have started to move on the shaft, the only answer here is to strip the gearbox, once the box is away from the engine and sundry parts it is just a matter of removing 30 or so screws to split the box, it is a grase filled box so there is no need to drain.
Don't know if this helps but the owners manual for my Husq YTH2148 indicates that the transmission fluid is not to be changed, ever. If there is a problem, the whole unit is to be replaced.
These mowers, along with many craftsman rider mowers, are actually made by Roper. Perhaps if you googled around a bit you could get more info relating to service of the transaxle.
On my YTH2148 you take off the air cleaner and then the backing plate for the air cleaner and the carb is right there. If memory serves me there is a drain hole on the bottom of the carb, you can unscrew the drain bolt and the old gas is gone.
Find your electric starter and trace the big red wire to the starter solenoid. Now follow the little red wire to a inline fuse block. Take out the fuse and chack for continutity or replace with same amp number type.
