I have had a look at the Asus website and i doesn't appear to support dual core or core2duo.
Sorry. If it is about 5 years old, then if you can afford it , buy yourself a newer upto date MB, CPU and Memory.

Sorry I can't help any further.

Is there a way to get a q8400 core 2 quad to work with an Asus p5sd2-vm motherboard?

ask them?

first off only Asus.com knows this, ask them,
reasons is.?
1: the BIOS must be updated first, to use other CPU (fact)
2: after the update there is a new qualified, CPU list by ASUS. QVL
3: the motherboard, electronics must like it too (bridge chips)
4: TPD rules (q8400 is 95watts)
now you know the rules 4.
so ask them, there are also MOBO version too, that can get in the way, v1, and v2 motherboard.

page 1. not listedfor quad.
LGA775 socket for Intel® Core™2 Duo/Pentium D/Pentium 4/Celeron D
so why not read the asus support page first (1st google hit)

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5SD2VM/HelpDesk_CPU/
only the maker knows this due to many BIOS versions.

Shows bios v510 up does. clear as day.

Hilw,, what is the difference between atom and intel core duo processor??

The Atom is a low power single core processor, it is roughly same speed and similar microinstruction set as a pentium 4 single core, and uses far less power and produces less heath than a regular pentium 4.

The intel core duo is a dual core processor that uses 64-bit core duo (dual cpu inside) processor.

Really disappointed with dual core

You can buy a 3.02 pentium 4 processor and need not change any thing else. On the other hand try changing your hard disk with a one with smaller capacity such as 80 GB make it primary with the windows partition not exceeding 15 GB . Make this drive (80 GB )primary and other one secondary.Increase the virtual memory size of your system and for sure you wont need to buy any thing or be depressed anymore.
