Hi,
Most of the times replacing the faulty capacitors works without any issues (provided that the capacitors have been changed properly)
As for new motherboard, I suggest that you try to boot up the PC with minimum components. First, remove the components such as hard disk, CD/DVD ROM, Graphic card, RAM(s), keyboard, mouse etc. Add 1 RAM, connect VGA cable/ display, modem, mouse and keyboard and Reconnect the power supply (24 Pin as well as 4 pin connectors, Processor Fan and observe if it works. The motherboard LED should lit up and steady. If you suspect that the power switch could be the cause, you can remove the front panel connectors (of power switch, power LED, HDD LED etc). Now, to boot up the PC, you have to short the POWER SWITCH Jumpers/ connectors with a screw driver. (PWR_SW). This step would clarify the functioning of the switch. Also, BIOS cell could be dead and may need replacement. Check the existing RAM on some other PC. Try to replace the RAM and see if it works.

Cd dvd door wont open.i push the button to put in cd and nothing happens.i do see a little cd on screen ,then it goes away.

Hi,
On the front of most CD or DVD drives there is a small pin hole that you can use to open the drive if it gets stuck. Grab yourself a strong paper clip, straighten one end, insert the straight bit into the hole and push firmly once you feel some resistance.
This will partly open the drive tray to either allow you to remove a cd or insert a new cd or dvd.
Question, Is there a light lit on the front of the drive when you are:
a. trying to eject (instead of using the front button on the drive try using the "Right Click and then Eject" option when selecting the dvd drive in My Computer), If not the drive may be stuffed (broken) or perhaps the 4 pin power connection lead at the rear of the dvd drive has fallen out.
b. is the drive tray sticky when opening or closing? (get a new drive...very easy and very cheap to buy and replace)
Good luck,
Steve (Melbourne,Australia)

ok to be clear you want to change the dvd cd rom drive corrct? here how to first thing first take of both sides of the computer (im telling how to for 99'9% of comuters not specifcly yours) there will be 2 screws on each side of the drive take these out now 2 ways to remove from here it will 1 slide out the front or 2 it will be stuck from the from becouse the farsade is holding it in (remember to take both cables out the back of the dvd rom drive) if its 2 then then there will be 2 ways to go from here if there is a lot of space at the back then take it out there if the box with wires is in the way there are 4 screws holing it on take these out and move but dont take all the wires out of everywhere the box of wires (psu) then take out old dvd rom drive and replace it put the psu back in and screw it in then screw in the dvd rom and wire it back up your done turn on the computer it will go to windows and install new device if howver there is not a lot of room and removing the psu wont help then you need to remove the farsade at the from (front cover) ther eis normaly 6 clips at the side push these to remove the farsade and pull ou the dvd rom and replace it that way hope this helps i can provide further info if needed just ask

Need to replace cd-rom drive, how difficult? dell dimension 3000 pc desktop

It is not difficult to change cd/dvd drive.
Open cpu cabinet.
Then remove icd cable and power cable from cd/dvd drive.
Then remove screws of old cd/dvd drive.
Then you can pull it from cabinet from front side.
Then put your new cd/dvd drive into it's position then lock it with screws.
Then connect ide cable from motherboard and power cable to drive.
Then you can use it.
If you connect to drive with 1 ide cable means if you connect harddrive and cd/dvd drive with 1 cable then set harddrive as master and cd/dvd rom as slave you can set it slave with jumper settings.
It is in back side of cd/dvd drive.
There is instruction how to slave it with jumper.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Open "My Computer".
Insert a CD-disk into the drive, while holding-down the LEFT-SHIFT key.
Does the label under the CD-icon change?
Remove the CD-disk.
Does the label under the CD-icon change?
Insert a DVD-disk into the drive, while holding-down the LEFT-SHIFT key.
Does the label under the CD-icon change?
Remove the DVD-disk.

If no changes in the icon, after the above, it's time to spend $40 to replace the "dead" drive with a new CD/DVD writer.

How do i remove the front panel to change CD/DVD drive? I do not have a manual for my desktop - I can remove the side panel but not the front panel. thanks you

You need to remove the side and then remove the front. The front is connected by latches which are on the top bottom and opposite side of the machine. Once you do that the drive should slide out the front of the machine. You may need to use a flat head screw driver to get the panel off.

DVD drive bay

yes you should be able to play CD on the DVD reader.
Dimension 2400 have drive slide mounted on the side of the hard drive, cd drive and floppy. they are different for each device. you need the 2 side mount for the dvd. in order to mount them in the Dell.
the drive is inserted from the inside of the box toward the front. The front panel will prevent the device from pop out.
yes, 3 party DVD, CD drive will be shorter and fater that what Dell porvide, but it will work, al long as the opening is accessable.
get the HP DVD driver.
