Computer takes time to start

I just got 512 MB RAM. My computer was as fast as rocket. But today i saw it has started to display a black screen at startup with a grey dash blinking. It takes a long time to startup now and also hangs midway sometime. I have to switch off the main power unit and and switch it on again at those times.

Installed F-Secure Client security. Four F-Secure processes show up on Windows task manager at startup with high CPU. FSM32.EXE reaches a max of 300MB memory within 1-2 minutes and drops to 1M. Heavy disk activity during this time. Have not scheduled any startup scans. No H/W or S/W changes other than FS installation. FS is obviously doing somekind of repetitive disk scan. I found no help on F-Secure site. Any comments?

Perhaps you are suffering from a memory mismatch? Is the memory in one or two DIMM's? This can happen if/when the memory is not seated properly(just open up the machine, with power off, battery out(if appropriate) and extract memory, then reinstall it. Try that first.

got backup?

I have motherboard P6VAP-A+, processsor PIII 1.0 GHz. I have two modules of RAM (128 MB each one). I have bought 512 MB at one module and installed it but computer could not work good. I had problems - it...

Simple test - leave only the 512 stick and go into the BIOS and see if the memory is correctly recognized. If it isn't then it's defective. If it is then download, burn and boot from
http://www.pclinuxos.com/
and run the memtest to be sure. If the memory is ok then you will have to reinstall Windows - it doesn't like the new memory.

Problems with 3 brand new PC 133 512 MB RAM in Netvista 6794

That last RAM probably is good. Many motherboards have problems using many different memory. All of the memory you have should be at least identical to ensure that they work. When RAM run at different speed or require a little more voltage, they will not let your motherboard boot. You can try mixing up the order you put the RAM in. Try putting the last RAM in the first slot by itself, the motherboard should boot. Then try the rest.

Also, whenever you add or change hardwares, you should clear the CMOS/BIOS settings.

As far as i can tell your computer will hold up to 1024 megs of ram that is 2 512 sticks. Just pic up the other 512 and call it a day that way you know your maxxed out on ram anyway. Not sure if it will take the different size sticks as I haven't found anything on their site. TRY HERE

Upgrading RAM on your Gateway 700X (DDR) Computer is easy, Gateway 700X (DDR) Computer takes the PC3200 DDR SDRAM DIMMs. Supports Dual Channel DDR. RAM Type, and comes installed with 512 MB (removable) of RAM.
You can upgrade your Gateway 700X (DDR) Computer to up to a maximum of 2.0 GB RAM, the Computer has 4 sockets to install RAM, already with 512 MB (removable) standard RAM installed. For best Computer performance use the maximum amount of allowed RAM per slot for your system.

Sdram capacity

its that 512 mb total capacity for your computer memory?? if so read this:
To find the total amount of RAM that can be added , subtract the amount of RAM currently in the computer from the maximum amount of memory the computer can hold. For example, a computer has 256 MB of RAM. If the maximum amount of memory the computer can hold is 512 MB, then 256 MB is the amount of RAM that can be added. this info from the HP website , to find out more , go to http://www.hp.com/support , enter the model number , and look for more information about your computer specs, hope this helps , please rate & thanks AJ
