Usually the software that comes with a new dvd/cd burner is just burning software (nero or roxio). Your drive is just plug and play and windows has all the drivers that is needed. I would uninstall the software you installed and try it with free software like IMGburn or CDburnerXP
dells r very funny, most hardware won't work with dells. your better off getting a clone or a no name brand from small computer place so u can add and modifiy your computer as new products comeout. try newegg.com or fryeselectronic.com great prices and can build your own computer
Should be IDE cable...IDE interface according to the specs. You computer has IDE connections so the drive should work.

first read the updates that windows downloads before installing it to your computer. do a custom install. there might be an issue with one of the windows update with your dvd. its a good thing that you have system restore.
Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete.
Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers.
See if that sorts it.
