I put my old vodafone sim in my new sony ericsson phone & after i enter my sim code it tells me Insert correct SIM card.
Does anyone know why?

I think the sim validity period has been expired ... i mean if you didnt recharge for 90 days the sim validity will be getting expired automatically... this is made by the network operator in standard for all sim cards .... if it is not true then try inserting in other handset & have a try ... if you face same problem then really the sim validity has been expired ... take a new sim....

The Vodafone SIM card will only work on the Vodafone mobile network. If you want to use different mobile provider then you need to purchase a new SIM card from that mobile provider.
If you intend to use your old mobile phone that was connected to Vodafone, then if this mobile phone is locked to Vodafone, then the new SIM card from a different mobile provider will not work in the old mobile phone unless it has been unlocked to allow you to use any SIM card/mobile provider.

You have entered the wrong PIN code too many times.
You need to unlock your phone using the PUK (PIN Unlocking Key) code. Your PUK code is provided by your network operator.
If you get error message as Insert correct SIM" You have inserted a SIM card that is not supported. Insert correct SIM card, or contact your Service Provider for a SIM unlock code.
If you get error message as Phone locked" or "Enter PIN" Your phone
is locked and you need to unlock it with your personal PIN. The default PIN is '0000', but you or your network operator may have changed it.

IF U ARE USING THE SAME CARRIER AS BEFORE (ATT FOR EXAMPLE) IT WONT NEED UNLOCKED. IF U WERE GIVEN A NEW SIM CARD FROM UR CARRIER WHEN THE NEW PHONE WAS BOUGHT, THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO USE THE SIM CARD. THE CARRIER ATTACHES THE SIM CARD NUMBER TO UR ACCOUNT. YOUR OLD ONE CAN BE USED ONLY TO ACCESS YOUR CONTACTS, BUT NOT TO MAKE CALLS.YOU CAN HOWEVER PUT THE OLD SIM CARD IN UR NEW PHONE FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF TRANSFERRING UR CONTACTS, THEN REPLACE YOUR NEW SIM CARD INTO UR NEW PHONE
Your sim card might be loose in it's place. Or you may need to "open line" your phone.
Better solution? Purchase a new sim,not a vodafone sim. For you to know what the problem is.
