Question about Canon Optura 500 Mini DV Digital Camcorder
I'm charging it right now, and the red light is blinking, so it must be charging. However, when I try to turn it on, most of the time it doesn't respond at all, even when it is plugged into the charger. Sometimes, it will "ding" like when it is starting up, the screen will turn on for maybe a half of a second, and then go black. I've tried removing the battery and putting in a new tape; same response. Help?

Were the battery goes there is a cover with a silver screw holding it on. There is a flex behind it that sometimes comes loose and causes the problem you have described. Remove the screw and cover and push on the part behind the cover. I work at canon and when we get a model like yours that usually is he problem.

never buy a canon. i have the same issue and it is not easy to fix. i dissasembled the thing already but too complicated. the lithium memory battery inside too is non user replaceable as it is illustrated in the manual. you got to have it serviced to replace it because that small battery is soldered. poor buyers....

Batteries may need to be recharged or replaced if the error persists after battery recharge or replacement the unit may require a service evaluation. If the batteries currently in the device and it is not working properly, remove the batteries and wait for 30 seconds and re-insert the batteries. In doing so if your camera has a back-up or date and time battery, remove this battery as well. Removal of the back-up battery will cause a full reset of the camera and will clear any settings, including date and time.
